POSITION SUMMARY

Aetna's mandate is to transform health and wellness via products that enable consumer engagement and a best-in-class experience. This team is responsible for Aetna's digital strategy and all digital products; as well as the development roadmap and execution of the roadmap. A key part of this team is to build an integrated platform and underlying products to drive engagement and revolutionize health and wellness.

Aetna is taking on a major initiative to redesign and rebuild many of its customer facing digital assets. This effort will include a completely new approach to developing software within Aetna, using the latest design approaches, technologies, and processes. Aetna Digital is a newly formed startup like business unit within Aetna, which will design, build and deliver a completely new and integrated digital experience for our users.

Fundamental Components:

The Database Designer and Modeler possesses solid design and database administration skills. Support focuses on the design, implementation, and maintenance of physical data models and databases. Key activities include access method analysis, application consulting, performance tuning, device allocation, data organization, security, and statistical methods, including the development and monitoring of standards and procedures affecting models, database management, design and maintenance. This individual is proficient in the utilization of DBA toolsets and more than one DBMS. He/she is a role model for his/her peers and often mentors them. Exhibits very strong technical or leadership skills.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:

DATABASE DESIGN:

  • Participates in or provides input to the logical data modeling process in order to ensure that business requirements are translated into a valid database design.

  • Employs relational, object, and star modeling database design principles as necessary in translating a logical model to a physical design that supports the business requirements.

  • Uses logical data models to create and maintain physical database designs which meet identified business needs and provide adequate safeguards for security and integrity.

  • Working with a data modeler, leads access modeling sessions to complete physical database design requirements.

  • Leads the physical database design process.

  • Ensures databases provide required functionality to meet identified business needs.

  • Ensures databases are high quality, cost-effective, maintainable, and contain solutions that can be leveraged.

  • Participates in data architecture requirements discussions and recommends usage of appropriate database and data management technology (i.e., DBMS, MQ, Data Propagator, DRDB).

Additional desired skills:

DATABASE IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE:

  • Implements databases for testing and production.

  • Monitors capacity and performance for test and production databases to ensure they are highly reliable, efficient, cost effective, and provide the required functionality.

  • Seeks opportunities to improve database performance by identifying tuning measures and implementing them when appropriate.

  • Ensures that test and production databases are properly backed up and recovered when necessary. Develops and maintains database backup and recovery procedures.

  • Ensures test and production databases are properly maintained; databases are reorganized/resized when necessary and other DBA utilities run when appropriate.

  • Participates in the development of standards and practices for the database environment. Ensures that appropriate standards and practices are followed.

EDUCATION

The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
