Job Title: Social Worker - Behavioral Health Unit (PRN)

*PRN Defined: *Work minimum of one shift per two week pay period to assist with staffing for coverage of absences for staff planned/unplanned and/or increase in census. The more you are available the more you can work if shifts are available.

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Unit Director and the Charge Nurse cares for the behavioral health needs of the Behavioral Health Unit patients. Performs related assessments, procedures and treatments, evaluations and updates of patient plan of care that assures and maintains high quality care for all assigned patients.

Specific Job duties:

*Completes psychosocial assessment for each patient.

*Conducts and documents individualized assessment of the patient’s needs, including current mental status for all client files.

*Provides individual therapy, case management services, psychotherapy groups, crisis intervention, psychiatric admission screening and discharge, psychosocial histories, family therapy, and community liaison.

*Provides back-up utilization review to case management/care coordination on an as-needed basis.

*Effectively applies social work theory, knowledge, methods and ethics, and the professional use of self to restore of enhance social, psychosocial, or biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, couples, families, and groups.

*Performs the duties of a qualitifed mental health professional by completing screening assessments in the ER, ICU or other areas of the hospital. Interviews patient, gathers data and provides information to the psychiatrist to determine admission/referral status.

*Assists in arranging for patient admission or discharge with appropriate outpatient referrals.

*Documents correctly all care and outcomes of care provided to the assigned patients in the medical record, including family and individual sessions, psychosocial histories, interdisciplinary education, and discharge planning and outcome.

*Manages the aggressive patient, manages unit milieu, monitors for signs of increased anxiety, reports medication side-effects to nurse (e.g, EPS, nausea, allergic reaction).

*Leads group activities, and performs telephone screenings for inpatient/outpatient referrals.

*Ensures and/or implements patient safety measures, reports medical/healthcare errors appropriately, ensures interdisciplinary collaborative team approach to patient care planning, and ensures medications are administered safely.

*Serves as an advocate for patient safety and patient rights. Demonstrates competence in unit specific patient safety knowledge and skills, including non-violent crisis intervention course, suicide assessment, seclusion and restraints, recognizing and managing contraband, managing psychotic behavior, recognizing and assessing escalation of anxiety or behavior.

*Graduate of a social work program.

*Master of Social Work (MSW, MSSW) from a CSWE program. Certified Social Worker (CSW) required.

*BLS required

*Minimum 2 years experience in a mental health setting preferred.
