Working closely with CP’s Sales and Marketing team, this role is responsible for setting the strategic direction of CP’s lines of business communications and connecting CP’s diverse service offering to key external markets and audiences using the web, social media, advertising, speaking engagements, conference sponsorships and other means. Additionally, this senior communications professional oversees a team in writing and creation of external reports like the annual report and CSR report and works closely with key stakeholders on internal reports. This position also has responsibility for CP’s brand guidelines, graphic design, website and social media, and the general look and feel of CP’s internal and external communications products. This is an exciting and necessary role as we shape the next generation of Marketing and Digital Communications at CP.


  • Create and implement communications strategies and corresponding materials for Sales and Marketing to align with company goals and support growth;

  • Grow and improve CP’s digital presence through technology and process improvements and implementation of digital communications best-practices;

  • Works closely with Legal and Government Affairs, Internal Communications, Investor Relations, Human Resources and other stakeholder groups; connects across the company to maximize efforts and optimize media assets while ensuring message alignment;

  • Communications materials include: marketing communications plans, web content, social media, campaigns and advertising, executive speaking engagements, trade show participation, customer events and sponsorships (working with CP’s Events team), etc;

  • Work with the Events team to manage the development and implementation of communications material and execution for several internal and external major corporate events;

  • Provide support to Events in other corporate events and programs including Annual General Meeting, community investment program, community relations and sponsorship-centred events, as required;

  • Manage the production of broadcast, photography/videography and print materials for internal and external stakeholders, with support from the broader Communications and Media Relations team;

  • Continually develop a strong team of direct and indirect reports to produce outstanding results;

  • Build key relationships beyond the communications team to understand the intricacies of the company and the business.


  • Must possess a degree in communications, journalism or marketing or post-secondary equivalent;

  • Ideal candidate has a minimum 15-20 years of experience in marketing and digital communications, with a preference for a candidate who has worked at a senior level in a publicly traded company;

  • Expertise in multiple communications platforms (e.g. print, video, digital and traditional advertising) and experience in strategic planning across digital platforms that deliver a ROI to the company;

  • Skilled with various styles and types of writing: speaking notes, ad copy, news releases, features;

  • Experience leading and inspiring an in-house team of communications and web professionals;

  • Experience overseeing external facing website, and managing stakeholders through re-designing/re-platforming;

  • Ability to develop and implement appropriate communication strategies;

  • Ability to conduct client need analysis and developing communication plans and solutions;

  • Ability to develop, implement and review strategic/business plan and demonstrate capability to produce deliverables and interim deliverables;

  • Operational/production management capability;

  • Strong relationship management and managerial leadership skills;

  • Influence, negotiating skills;

  • Ability to communicate complex issues to all levels of organization;

  • Strong verbal and presentation skills;

  • Must be able to work effectively cross functionally;

  • Experience in media relations/crisis communications would be considered a strong asset.
