CP’s Communications and Media Relations team is looking for an experienced media relations professional to join our high-performing and dynamic team. While the contract position is media and external relations focused, experience in internal communications, marketing and brand, and digital and social media will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will be integral in telling CP’s story to external audiences.

This is a contract position starting as soon as possible with an end date in Q1 of 2021. The team is based out of CP’s corporate head office in Calgary, AB.


  • Production of a daily digest of media coverage;

  • Proactive and reactive media relations, media monitoring and key message preparation;

  • Serve as company spokesperson for media in communities across Canada;

  • Supporting proactive media communications, writing press releases, communications plans and other materials required as assigned by managing director, Communications and Media Relations;

  • Responding to emerging issues; preparing key messages, speaking notes, Q&As; and implementing the appropriate external communications strategies;

  • Assisting in development, implementation and evaluation of communications and media relations initiatives, strategies and tactics in Canada;

  • Participation in media promotions and planning development for large events and projects related to CP assets such as the CP Holiday Train;

  • Working closely with Community Relations, Government Affairs and Legal teams.


  • Post-secondary education in journalism, public relations or communications;

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in a similar role managing complex projects or high-profile issues in a publicly traded company;

  • A professional designation such as an APR or ABC would be considered an asset;

  • Exceptional writing skills and ability to produce error-free work within short deadlines;

  • A strong understanding and judgement of Canadian media, media relations and community relations with the demonstrated ability to make strategic media relations recommendations;

  • A grasp of technical and financial concepts, and superior writing skills to explain complex information into easily understandable language;

  • A strong record working with senior executives and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with peers;

  • Proven ability to work calmly in fast-paced and high-pressure situations;

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills;

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team;

  • Proficiency with news release wire services, media monitoring software and Microsoft Office;

  • Understanding of social media and other platforms;

  • Availability outside of regular working hours as needed for 24/7 media and crisis communications (ICS training and real-time crisis response experience would be considered an asset).
