Merck Principal Data Scientist, Safety Assessment in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Job Description

The Digital Operations and Innovation (DOI) group in the Safety Assessment and Laboratory Animal Resources (SALAR) department is looking for a Data Scientist (Principal Scientist level) to support ongoing and new efforts changing the way SALAR leads drug safety assessment. DOI seeks to bring new understanding to drug safety evaluation by modeling scientific data and data flows, applying optimization methods, time series forecasting, and machine learning to help prioritize future experimental studies, forecast demand, discover novel biology, and advise new regulatory paradigms that provide even safer drugs at reduced cost. The candidate will play a key role in supporting an overall strategy of applying new computational tools to classical pharmaceutical sciences. Prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry isn’t necessary, as we expect any new team member to learn and grow along with us.

The candidate will be part of a collaborative team comprised of biologists, chemists, toxicologists, computer scientists, and animal care staff. This role will be supporting an essential part of our Company's Research & Development Division and SALAR’s broader efforts to be an industry leader in the application of data sciences to drug safety prediction, which will support early pipeline decision making. Candidates must be willing to collaborate with experimental lab colleagues in designing and refining experimental designs, guiding testable hypotheses, and supporting novel analytical methods at the intersection of biological and computational sciences.
