Healthcare as we know it is changing rapidly, and IBM Watson’s Health’s Life Sciences and Personalized Health will be an essential cornerstone in bridging the transition to seamless, coordinated, high quality healthcare across the continuum.

In this context, the Leader, Portfolio Management will report to the Global VP of Life Sciences and Personalized Health in Watson Health, and work across the Watson Health leadership team. An enthusiastic, influential, and inspiring self-starter, the Leader will provide executive leadership to support (1) Portfolio Management of the Life Science Vertical, and (2) Leadership of the newly created Personalized Health Vertical focusing on Direct to Consumer product offerings.

In Life Sciences, the Leader will support portfolio management across the Life Sciences offerings, supporting the transformation of the Life Sciences Vertical to a proactive, product-centric, industry-focused organization delivering scale, value and growth while addressing customer needs. The Leader will be responsible for working with internal stakeholders to coordinate synergistic processes that will exponentially accelerate the development of a coordinated offering to transform the external industry. Leading the drive toward internal alignment of portfolio offerings and teams, the Leader will champion a collective, coordinated vision, strategy, and framework for identification of strategic product and client opportunities, and will coordinate the development of common processes for design, development, sales, contracting, and client implementation. Through collaborative leadership, supportive management, and strategic vision and approach, the Leader will be part of Watson Health’s evolution to the industry’s go-to partner for a provide a coordinated portfolio of services to clients across the continuum of care.

In Personalized Health, the Leader will work with the current Offering Team to establish the newly created vertical, setting strategic direction and business model, developing the portfolio of services to support growth opportunities, refining existing products, and identifying and executing new product initiatives to meet Watson Health’s growth goals and strategy. The Leader will work with Offering Managers to direct the overarching strategy for IBM Watson’s Personalized Health offerings from ideation to implementation, exploring the viability of potential innovation ideas and developing solution concepts that can be tested, refined and piloted in the market to drive sustaining and disruptive innovation in the Personalized Health business with initial focus in US with global expansion over time.

Key Responsibilities

For both Life Sciences and Personalized Health, the Leader will collaborate, manage, and innovate, championing the development of best practices, model programs, and transformational healthcare.

  • Strategic Planning : Collaborate across the Watson Health and IBM organizations to develop, align, and integrate the short-term and long-term vision, strategy, and goals into the broader framework of Watson Health and IBM. Serve as the liaison to lead and collaborate on strategic initiatives and task forces with internal and external groups, creating model programs to demonstrate the value of AI capabilities, and using facilitation and presentation skills to help groups reach consensus and develop a plan of action.

  • Business Development : Facilitate innovative internal and external collaborations by building key relationships with executives, portfolio offering teams, clients, and other internal and external stakeholders to inform the design, development, and direction of portfolio offerings. Identify new business opportunities for joint ventures, partnerships, and collaborations with industry, providers, health systems, payers, etc., and where appropriate, facilitate contracting and operations of these program opportunities.

  • Ambassador : Interact with external stakeholders including IBM Watson Health Clients, e.g., employers, providers, payers, life sciences; the health system ecosystem including technology startups, accelerators, investors, and related players; state or federal government; and others as appropriate and identified by leadership. Communicate and spread best practices, stories, and future vision to create buy-in, advance adoption, and build a culture of excitement about transforming healthcare through internal presentations, representation at external conferences and other marketing events, development of communication and copy materials, and identification and generation of media leads.

  • People Management : Get to know, establish, and manage best practices, and establish cultural inter-offering and intra-offering interpersonal team dynamics through transformational management of stakeholders, portfolio offering teams, and supporting functional groups, including but not limited to Executive Leadership, Client Executive Sales, Marketing, Public Relationships, HR, Government Relations, Offering Managers, etc.

  • Infrastructure Development & Management : Across multiple domains including but not limited to technology, measurement and quality, education and training, direct the collaborative development, implementation, and oversight of centralized, standardized systems and workflows across offerings to transform Watson Health into a relevant client partner with a coordinated portfolio of services across the continuum of care. As appropriate, model and communicate best practices to be expanded across Watson Health.

  • Technology and Information Systems : In partnership with Watson Health IS, Portfolio Offering Managers, and other stakeholders, guide the development of Personalized Health offerings. The Director will guide the team to explore, evaluate, and implements new technologies; assess and develop additional IS system resources as needed; develop policies, procedures and systems to ensure portfolio offerings, internal offerings, and external client systems are supported for troubleshooting, system access, etc.

  • Measurement and Quality : In collaboration with the appropriate stakeholders, the Director will direct develop, and manage the development, monitoring, and oversight of key performance indicators and dashboards, as well as best practice dissemination and ongoing improvement efforts.

  • Education and Training : Develop and oversee processes and infrastructure to support education of internal team members; external clients including life sciences, employers, payers, health systems, etc.; and end-users of Watson Health tools, including patients, clinicians, management, and support staff.

  • Portfolio Development : Develop Personalized Health portfolio offerings, and Life Sciences if so directed, by negotiating with all parties to establish appropriate role definition and hand-offs; overseeing and establishing protocols for implementation and ongoing operations; and refining business models as necessary.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • MPH, MHA, MBA or other comparable Master’s degree.

  • 10+ years on-the-ground healthcare operations experience, or similar, in a healthcare organization, e.g., health system, provider, payer, and/or technology/industry.

  • 10+ years healthcare consulting experience, or similar, in business development or digital health.

  • 10+ years healthcare technology experience.

  • Proven leader with the ability to gain credibility and trust; a successful track record of working between executive decision makers and operational staff; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to effectively facilitate and communicate with all levels of the internal and external client organizations, ranging from executives, physicians, front line management and staff, and beyond.

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • Experience working within a start-up environment within a large, matrixed organization, would be extremely beneficial in this role.

  • Experience delivering services strongly preferred.

  • Value Based Care and Population Health experience a plus.

  • Familiarity with design thinking and creative approaches to problem solving and strategy formulation a plus.
