American Water Manager of Operational Excellence in Camden, New Jersey

Primary Role

This position is responsible for the development and implementation of integrated operational strategies for the optimization of performance of people, assets and processes within operational and capital service delivery. Areas of focus include GIS, capital investment strategy, maintenance policy and strategy, key performance metrics and data for decision making. Responsible for the evaluation, prioritization, deployment and analysis of technology solutions to optimize employee safety, public health and water quality, asset life cycle cost, asset and people performance, capital efficiency, training, and treatment processes.

Key Accountabilities

  • _ Operational Strategy Development:_ Develop and implement strategies to operate assets in an optimal fashion to improve asset performance (reliability), reduce operating risk (safety and compliance) and reduce whole life cycle costs (O&M plus investment) of asset ownership. Develop strategies and implement best operating practices to promote continuous improvement, innovation, cost control, operational readiness, reduce disruptions and deliver excellent customer service. Provide strategic and tactical operational input to business plans, operational plans and capital plans in support of the operations and capital investment.

  • _ Asset Management:_ Oversee the business unit’s asset management team and technology platforms, including GIS, maintenance management and SCADA. Interacts with Engineering, Operations, Business Performance, Contractors, Vendors and Management personnel to develop, implement, analyze, report and ensure maintenance programs and efforts meet operational needs and business goals. Provide expertise, prioritization, evaluation, analysis, training and deployment of new technologies, best practices, pilot programs, and company initiatives.

  • _ Data Analysis:_ Oversee the collection of operations and asset performance data. Perform advanced data analysis to track performance, and ensure internal and external business data needs are met. Lead root cause analysis and process improvement efforts for complex operational challenges in order to drive continuous improvement in operations and capital delivery.

  • _ Other Duties:_ Perform other operational support duties as requested, such as the supporting the business development functions in due diligence and operational analysis, and ensure effective integration and performance of acquisitions.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Deep knowledge of water and/or wastewater or other utility or operational service business

  • Knowledge of the assessment of operating practices and the establishment of best practices.

  • Knowledge of Water Production, Wastewater Treatment, water distribution, collections, Source Water Management, Engineering, and / or construction management practices.

  • Good working knowledge of industry developments, new technology and current trends in water utility management and other related water management disciplines.

  • Experience with common operations processes and maintenance tools – CMMS, Water Quality testing and monitoring, source water protection, management and monitoring, predictive maintenance tools, etc.

  • Knowledge of employee relations, applicable safety and environmental regulations, federal and state water quality and design regulations and technical standards.

  • Exceptional Computer literacy. Very strong skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, flow-charting, project scheduling, databases, data analytics tools

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (e.g., presentation, listening, report writing).

  • Strong team-working skills and ability to manage/produce in a culturally and geographically diverse, multi-company, matrix organization.

  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills as an individual and as a manager.

  • Experience in challenging processes, decisions and plans at levels up to senior management.

  • Process improvement skills. Lean Six Sigma, Agile or equivalent qualification preferred.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Finance, Information technology or Operational management or related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 8 yrs. water and/or wastewater, other utility, or operational management experience, including line management and business performance improvement experience.

Travel Requirements

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Some travel may be required.
