American Water Program Manager - Strategic Planning in Camden, New Jersey

Primary Role

The Program Manager will work in the program management office and assist Executive leadership with the strategic planning process and track key strategic initiatives for American Water. The strategic planning process includes identifying, documenting and promoting AW’s companywide and detailed strategic outcomes. To promote AW’s Strategic outcomes this role will work closely with leadership and internal / external communications to develop leadership meetings, employee communications and clarify intent in various other forums. Tracking key initiatives includes working with the business to measure the roll out and adoption of strategic initiatives companywide. The Program Manager consolidates various measures to provide transparency to the business and executive leadership. In addition, this role will identify, share and elevate best practices, conflicting strategic priorities, resources constraints and cultural impacts to the appropriate level of the organization to enable decision making and forward progress towards strategic outcomes.

Key Accountabilities

  • Document strategic outcomes and key companywide strategic initiatives for American Water.

  • Work with leadership to define detailed strategic outcomes and initiatives including resources, people and cultural implications. Ensure these detailed strategies are aligned to the companywide strategies.

  • Work with leadership to prepare presentation materials and other communications for our executive leadership team and board of directors.

  • Assist leadership and internal / external communications in planning conferences, talking points and other methods to promote strategic outcomes.

  • Create tools and reports to perform day-to-day tracking and administration of strategic initiatives.

  • Encourage collaborate with all business units and provide transparency regarding the status of these strategic initiatives. Measure progress towards strategic initiatives and share best practices and potential hurdles.

  • Manage strategy process, through identify processes for improvement, documenting existing processes, identify gaps between current processes and the desired state, assist in the design of new processes, help to develop process performance measures and plan the transition to a new process.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Expertise in project / program management

  • Ability to understand and articulate complex water and wastewater industry ideas.

  • Strong Communication skills and ability to tailor communications to the appropriate level. Experience working with Executive Leadership is a plus.

  • Past experience working with corporate strategy; technology; Water, wastewater or other utility experience; and/or a program management office is preferred.

  • Knowledge analyzing industry trends and conditions to inform various strategies.

  • Knowledge of Agile management process.

  • Technical competency with broad understanding of the technical issues and ability to keep up to date with new appropriate technology skills.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Products.

  • Flexibility to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity and rapid change

  • Ability to lead through influence and to deliver results through others

  • Should possess a high energy level, sense of urgency, decisiveness, and an ability to work well under pressure

  • Should possess a curiosity and a passion towards engaging the imagination of senior level executives in grasping and enabling the fundamentals of change

  • Should have excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Should have good verbal , written and presentation skills Should have very good conflict resolution and negotiating skills

  • Should have good collaboration , prioritization and team working skills

  • Should be able to work in an agile , fast paced and dynamic environment and be comfortable with constant change

  • Should have a creative approach to problem-solving with the ability to focus on details while simultaneously maintaining the “big picture” view

  • Should be a fast learner with attention to detail Should be receptive to constructive criticism when necessary

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Project Management, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, Marketing, Communications and/or Computer Science/Technology area is preferred

  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience for a large company or division of a corporation requiring project management and executing on multiple priorities.

  • Experience working with and influencing top leadership, executives or board members.

  • Regulated Utility Experience a plus
