Primary Role

This role leads a team of Talent Acquisition Partners for American Water's Technology & Innovation function. Responsible for providing thought leadership, coaching, guidance and support on varying levels of talent acquisitions issues. Responsible for the overall coordination, communication and administration of the function across assigned client area. Responsible for effective service delivery, process improvements and system utilization.

In addition, this role is responsible for providing the highest level of talent acquisition services to assigned client groups, delivering high quality talent while advancing the American Water brand across numerous markets and professional communities. Perform full lifecycle talent acquisition and develop trusting relationships with business leaders, hiring managers, candidates, external vendors/partners, and the general community.

Demonstrates American Water’s values by collaborating with key stakeholders and building strong partnerships across all levels of leadership, HRBP’s, ERBPs, Labor, HR COEs, Legal, etc. to drive a consistent, fair, compliant and stellar talent acquisition experience and corporate culture. Must be comfortable and confident managing multiple and complex issues, competing priorities and at times competing stakeholders in a fast and ever-changing environment – with a positive and collaborative attitude. Thrives within an environment of continuous improvement.

Possess a deep understanding of the talent acquisition function and experience within a high volume, fast pace environment.

Thorough knowledge of corporate business operations and the ability to translate business needs into recruitment strategies and actions.

Create solutions that will be effective across departments, and geographies, and effectively coordinate, leverage and communicate these solutions to ensure consistent delivery, while delivering an exceptional candidate and client experience.

Possess the ability to successfully create a sense of urgency and influence others without authority as an internal consultant, to educate clients and HR/ER Business Partners on process, procedure and best practices.

This position is part of the Talent Management COE. The position will interact with numerous locations in multiple states or businesses across American Water. Must possess the ability to form fast, effective relationships, both with leadership and HR Operations.

Key Accountabilities

  • Establishes internal service level agreements and operational controls.

  • Builds effective business relationships through exceptional service delivery and communication.

  • Contributes to the development of the TA strategy.

  • Ensures a stellar candidate and employee experience that aligns with American Water’s values and culture.

  • Serve as a talent acquisition expert, providing insight and guidance on labor market trends and challenges, sourcing strategies, and candidate details, demonstrating effective listening skills with the ability to respond to requests in a timely manner

  • Analyzes data and feedback to improve service, tools and processes; comfortable with reports/metrics and HR data.

  • Responsible for employee and manager communications and education.

  • Contributes to the development of the Agile Talent Acquisition strategy

  • Serves as subject matter expert on complex issues and appropriately escalates.

  • Ensures consistent and fair application, approach and documentation.

  • Coaches team members; provides continuous feedback develops his/her team.

  • Responsible for compliance with all federal, state and local laws.

  • Stays current with best practices and market trends; manages assigned requisitions

  • Leads projects effectively, including initiating, planning, analyzing, executing, measuring and communicating progress as assigned.

  • Supports a culture of passionate, values-driven, customer-obsessed people

  • Delivers fluid and timely talent acquisition processes that allow for quick action and flexibility

  • Uses technologies to operate at the pace of the customer

  • Offers foundational practices and solutions that can be customized/personalized with focus on business need and impact

  • Provides proactive solutions through synergies and collaboration across the business


  • Must possess working knowledge of:

o Recruiting practices

o Microsoft Office suite of products

o Expert level proficiency with Success Factors applicant tracking system is required

o Various recruiting methodologies, including social, Boolean searches, etc.

  • Must possess:

o Ability to establish and organize people and tasks to focus on goal attainment

o Superior verbal, written and presentation communication skills; with ability to do public speaking

o Strong coaching, counseling and teaching skills

o Ability to collaborate with virtual teams and also face to face

o Ability to proactively engage and influence others at all levels, at times without formal authority

o Excellent internal and external customer service

o Confidence and ability to have critical conversations, if necessary

o Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with different groups with diverse needs and requirements to develop and deliver workforce education

  • At least 7 years’ experience in the field

  • Strong technology acumen

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of undergraduate education and specific relatable work experience in a relevant field
