Thermo Fisher Scientific Cold Chain Packaging Engineer in Carlsbad, California

Thermo Fisher Scientific is looking for a Cold Chain Packaging Engineer to develop and deploy Cold Chain and Sustainable Packaging systems and processes.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, specify, and qualify cold chain shipping solutions for active and passive shipping systems.

  • Technical expert to develop thermal modeling for cold chain packaging designs.

  • Design and Develop Recyclable Coolers, test and validate to suit Thermofisher cold chain needs.

  • Customize Recyclable Coolers to suit business and customer needs.

  • Identify alternate insulative materials, designs and material sources.

  • Author technical protocols, reports, SOPs and pack-outs

  • Develop closed loop and returnable domestic and global cold chain systems.

  • Develop data analytics to support shipping performance and cost impact.

  • Be the person for in-plant validation and external test agencies coordination.

  • Develop temperature monitoring programs and custom Ambient profiles for Thermofisher shipping lanes.

  • Develop global cold chain and alternate material supplier base in coordination with sourcing.

  • Develop rigorous strategies to reduce costs through data analytics and alternate cold chain shipping system.

  • Develop Cold Chain packaging systems that can work Distribution Automation

  • Utilize Practical Process Improvement (PPI) –internal company Lean Six Sigma/Continuous Improvement methodology to execute on projects.

  • Work with EHS, Facilities, Manufacturing and global green committees to execute projects across multiple sites

  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned

Minimum Skills/Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to generate new ideas and think creatively

  • Strong project management skills and ability to influence, lead and facilitate cross-functional project teams

  • Demonstrated ability to drive problem solving, strategy development, and execution by managing cross-functional teams (providing process and thought leadership)

  • Proven Finance knowledge including the ability to perform project NPV/payback analysis

  • Experience with project financing options and capital requests

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and assess priorities effectively

  • Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines

  • Ability to work in and bring structure to ambiguous environments; flexibility to work according to the needs of the business

  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills

  • Proven ability to work across geographies and cultures

  • Strong analytic, written and oral communication skills with an emphasis on communicating complex ideas in a simple way and influencing senior leaders

  • Proficient in the use of ERP systems, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access

Education Requirements

  • B.S. in a technical discipline, Packaging, Chemical, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Lean/Six-Sigma certified

  • Project management and Finance education or equivalent experience is preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Must have knowledge of cold chain / perishables (thermal modeling)

  • Desired certifications (Certified Packaging Engineer, Certified Packing Professional)

  • This role requires experience with developing cold chain systems and packaging development Experience with ISTA / ASTM standards and qualifying cold chain shipping containers

  • Ability to coordinate packaging qualifications/projects, creating strategies using off-the-shelf and engineered solutions

  • Experience in Autocad and Solid Works preferred.

  • 3-4 years of experience in related field and/or organization

  • 2-3 years’ experience executing projects

  • Demonstrated project success through past experience and education.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Financial terminology and project payback analysis

Working Conditions

Many duties are performed while sitting at a desk or conference room, (e.g., operating a computer, using a telephone, or writing and analyzing data and/or reports, attending meetings). In addition, walking or standing within the office area is required for conducting site evaluations, equipment reviews, process observations etc. May require 5-15% travel
