Position Summary and Key Responsibilities

Manages the Carlsbad Technical Operations Teams and provides strategic direction and guidance in the areas of manufacturing processes and technology, process improvement, quality performance and improvement and strategic capacity development.

  • Lead technology transfer and process development focusing on highly potent product lines including antibody production and quality control, bio-conjugations, complex formulations, enzyme and recombinant protein expression and purification, gel manufacturing, DNA/protein standards, competent cells, vectors and transfection reagents.

  • Lead the technical transfer activities into manufacturing for both internal and external processes (site to site transfers), including process technical support, technology transfers, process and equipment validation and product life-cycle management.

  • Organize technical reviews and provide project status updates to the Operations and Division leadership.

  • Act as a first-line resource to manage the interface between R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, and Program Management functions, and to align the functional strategy with peer dependencies and with program, portfolio, and corporate goals.

  • Lead technical support deviations, change controls, and CAPAs including determination of event impact, root-cause analysis and corrective action identification.

  • Develop and mentor a high-performing team with a vision of setting industry-leading standards in this field.

  • Lead and implement process improvements and LEAN programs with effective balance among quality, financial, and inventory risks.

  • Develops, proposes and helps implement improvement plans for capacity, processes and technologies.

  • Attends tech transfer meetings to ensure that speed and success of implementation is in line with site capabilities and capacity.

  • Tracks quality performance trends and keeps Corrective Action Preventative Action (CAPA) actions on track.

  • Manage a large multi-disciplinary operations group and assigns tasks and priorities to direct reports daily or by project, where appropriate.

  • Develops contacts at all other relevant manufacturing sites to understand capabilities.

  • Develops proposed process trains for new products potentially entering the manufacturing line.

  • Carries out direction as a site leadership team member.

  • Selects, develops and evaluates staff to ensure the efficient operation of the function. Works with and advises staff on administrative policies and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, engineering or related Life Sciences discipline. Equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience may be considered.

  • 10-15 years’ experience in bio-manufacturing with direct technical experience.

  • 10 years’ experience in a management role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or other science-related field and/or Business.

  • Exceptional Good Manufacturing Practices knowledge.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally

  • Strong leadership and conflict resolution skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to balance/maintain conflicting goals, responsibilities, and priorities of the organization.
