Maintains, operates, repairs, and installs water utility related items; reads meters; checks for proper metering of water and reports any discrepancies between company records and what is found in the field.
Uses all types of hand tools normally used in performing duties of the job. Operates boring and tapping machines, ditch pumps, generators, compressors, utility tractors and backhoes, trailers, trucks, truck crane, pipe cutters, jack hammers, tampers, etc. Installs and maintains all types and sizes of pipeline, mains, services, fittings, hydrants, valves, meter boxes, and other appurtenances.
Changes charts, picks up water samples, and sterilizes water mains.
Paints, services, and inspects fire hydrants. Checks mains, fire hydrants, and services for leaks. Repairs leaks in all sizes and types of pipelines, mains, services, and hydrants. Reads meters and records readings via various meter reading and recording devices. Inspects meters to see if they have been tampered with or if seals are broken and reports conditions. Reports any plumbing which may be in violation of the rules and regulations of the company.
Raises, lowers, removes, and relocates mains, fire hydrants, services, service boxes, valve boxes, and other appurtenances. Reports occupied houses where a meter is not set or any houses or buildings that are vacant or torn down.
Digs, rakes, picks, shovels, hand tamps, caulks joints, installs clamps, cuts and threads pipe, lifts and moves pipe and fittings and other materials or equipment used on jobs. Operates valves, curb stops, and fire hydrants' flushes mains, services, and hydrants, as required.
Performs maintenance work on standpipes, elevated tanks, ground storage tanks, and associated structures. Cleans trucks and various other equipment used; puts tools in proper location.
Secures meter reading and recording devices from the time they are removed from the office until they are returned to the office. Perform general building and grounds maintenance, as required. Cleans up storeyard, garage, and other properties; changes and repairs meters; repairs and paints equipment; paints buildings. Assists Serviceperson during inclement weather or when not needed to
read meters. Follows instructions and/or performs other related duties as required by supervision.
Able to meet the physical requirements of the position. Able to speak clearly and be understood over a two-way radio and able to understand others over a two-way radio. Able to operate a vehicle with manual transmission and drive a vehicle to transport one or more associates reading meters, as needed. Able to read meters accurately after a brief training period. Courteous in contacts, both internal and external.
Able to learn the proper names and terminology of materials used in the water utility industry. Mechanical aptitude for the work involved.
High school graduate or equivalent
Licenses & Certifications
Must possess a valid IL Commercial Driver's license or have the ability to obtain within 90 days.
