Controls treatment plant pumps and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use.
Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant. Controls feeds specified amounts of chemicals, such as chloride, ammonia, and lime into water or adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.
Starts agitators to mix chemicals and allows impurities to settle to bottom of tank. Pumps purified water into water mains.
Monitors panelboard and adjusts controls to regulate flow rates. Cleans tanks and filter beds, using backwashing (reverse flow of water).
Tests water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities, using colorimeter, turbidimeter and conductivity meter. Dumps chemicals such as alum into tanks to coagulate impurities and reduce acidity.
Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity, and water pressure. May operate portable water-purification plant to supply drinking water.
May purify waste water from plant preparatory to pumping water. May utilize telemetry system to monitor water tank levels and water pressure and adjust booster pumps to maximize system effectiveness in delivery of treated water to the system.
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Required Licenses & Certifications*
West Virginia Class III Operator license (water) with the ability to obtain class IV license in the future
Valid drivers' license and safe driving record
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible injury to the sense of hearing unless hearing protection is worn.
Hazards: Situations which can expose the individual to risk of injury due to odors, toxic conditions, dust, or poor ventilation.
