The Role

This Managing Counsel will lead the Division Initiatives section of the Enterprise Risk, Regulatory and Audit (ERRA) Division and will report directly to the Deputy General Counsel and Head of the ERRA Division. This Managing Counsel will be responsible for directing a diverse range of work, including project management, communication and other division specific initiatives related to the legal services provided by the entire ERRA Division and its Deputy General Counsel.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the Deputy General Counsel, section leaders, senior lawyers, and other control groups and business clients to ensure optimal legal support to enterprise issues related to Corporate Risk, Regulatory and Wells Fargo Audit Services

  • Leading cross function/virtual teams to strategize, plan and manage the execution and operational risk analysis of projects and initiatives

  • Initiating and leading projects involving division process improvement, including change management initiatives within the Legal Department and in partnership with external constituencies

  • Developing and managing a team responsible for providing the Division with substantive legal analysis and reporting focused on monitoring developments and activities of the external legal and regulatory environment which impact risk management, regulatory matters, and audit services in the industry

  • Coordinating with lawyers, paralegals, and other support staff, as well as, outside counsel to develop and maintain uniform and up-to-date reports, as may be necessary

  • Overseeing regular and ad hoc division specific training for attorneys, paralegals and assistants who support the Division

  • Developing the Division communication plan which includes coordinating team meetings, agendas, follow-ups and managing the information flow for the Division

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with internal stakeholders and related groups so that the Division can rapidly and uniformly respond to and manage its work by aligning with appropriate subject matter experts, attorneys, paralegals and assistants

  • Providing leadership to consultants in the integration/implementation of programs, services, and initiatives with cross functional business partners, recognizing the significance of competing priorities and strategies

  • Managing a team of professionals who will collaborate with Legal Department stakeholders to develop metrics and track and evaluate performance of Division programs, services, and initiatives to ensure that plans and programs adhere to appropriate policies and regulations

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key internal constituencies, including management and senior business leaders, risk and compliance partners, and other relevant constituencies

  • Fostering individual team member growth and development in substantive areas and helping to build transferrable skill sets

  • This position will manage attorneys, paralegals and/or other operational specialists

This collaborative leader must be capable of initiating action and managing change. The position requires a leader with strong relationship management, influencing, vision and execution skills. A key differentiator will be the ability to understand and operate successfully in a complex, heavily matrixed corporate environment. The role requires a high degree of personal ownership and accountability for achievement and outcomes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Active State Bar membership

  • 1+ year of leadership experience

  • 10+ years of experience as a practicing attorney; or 8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney and 2+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following areas: risk, compliance, contracts, government/regulatory, financial services, or technology

Desired Qualifications:

  • Business development experience including development and execution of business vision, strategies, and goals

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships within and across business lines at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to make complex decisions

  • Effective organizational, multi tasking, and prioritizing skills

  • Leadership and management experience for team of attorneys and staff with a section or legal specialty including developing virtual staff and managing a budget
