Primary Role

Responsible for overseeing the property related tax compliance and consulting obligations for American Water Works and its affiliates. These responsibilities include providing consulting and compliance for: property based franchise taxes and fees, property taxes, tax depreciation and deferred tax calculations supporting provision and return compliance process. Supervisory responsibilities include process oversight that involves leading, mentoring, and reviewing the work of other tax professionals assigned to support property related tax compliance processes. Reports directly to the Manager of General Tax and indirectly to the manager of Income tax.

Key Accountabilities

  • Overseas the entire property tax compliance process and build best practices. Work as a liaison between other department and state authorities to ensure the efficient data reporting.

  • Lead the property tax compliance and ensure timely, accurate compliance with all aspects of property tax including Annual returns, asset reconciliation within Power Plant and Sort out the difference, is any. Work closely with property tax assessors and state tax authorities to build best practice for reporting and audit trails.

  • Build best practices and process around plant based data management both in PowerPlant as well as in Powertax to reduce the manual effort for property tax reporting as well as income tax reporting purposes.

  • Manage property tax audits, including gathering information and responding to requests from various taxing authorities. Establish strong communication channels with regulatory agencies as well as American Water regulated entities to ensure timely and consistent tax accounting reporting.

  • Establish relationships with key internal and external groups, including finance, accounting and operational personnel to develop best practices ensuring account reconciliation, audit responses and documentation related to property tax filings.

  • Support ad hoc requests from various other department and business partners.

  • Support reporting needs for the company mergers, acquisitions and restructuring activities.

  • Ensure the accuracy of all tax related research and data.

  • Lead federal and state tax audits as required.

  • Manage and develop tax professionals including direct report and interns, providing coaching, and career developmental opportunities.

Knowledge / Skills

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, with 5-8 years of relevant experience.

  • Must have a strong understanding of fixed assets database tools. Prior experience with Power Plant and Powertax is strongly preferred.

  • A Master degree is preferred, along with a Certified Master of the Institute (CMI) Certification from the Institute for Tax Professionals (IPT)

  • Strong written and oral communication skills with proven ability to interact effectively with internal customers, management and external professionals (i.e. auditors).

  • Excellent analytical, systemic and problem solving skills, including the ability to lead/direct project teams/initiatives or effectively work independently.

  • Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of tax regulations and regulatory practices.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, team building and decision-making.

  • SAP, Power Plant, Powertax, Hyperion, Trintech/Assure net, SharePoint and Tax software experience desired

  • Tax compliance knowledge and experience, especially with accounting for income taxes (ASC 740) and Sarbanes – Oxley requirements preferred.

  • Experience in the utility industry and knowledge of regulatory accounting a plus.

  • Minimum seven (7) years; four (4) years or more supervisory experience preferred.

  • Prior experience with dealing regulatory agencies on tax assessments experience a strong preference

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required. CPA or advanced degree preferred.
