Primary Role

The Senior Software Engineer solves complex technology problems in a specific domain technology area related to Geographical Information Systems and Data. They help define and evolve the technology direction for their domain or line of business areas of accountability. They assist in the creation and maintenance of a technology roadmap that enables business outcomes through technology and software applications. The Senior Software Engineer will lead projects with some guidance that execute against this roadmap. This includes development from concept through commercialization including line extensions, new products, quality improvements and productivity improvements. They also contribute to the development of new products and applications for their domain area. The Senior Software Engineer adheres to technology standards and the governance framework set by leadership. They work collaboratively with other technology domains to develop innovative software solutions to enable the business. The Senior Software Engineer demonstrates the value of prototyping as an integral and regular step in the design process of conceptualizing, refining, and finalizing an inventive solution, service or product. They are responsible for driving innovation from a technical point of view, pushing the boundaries of complex services and solutions that are relevant to business applications and products.

Application and Web Development - 30%

Create technology solutions for business users by developing, implementing, and maintaining commerical off-the-shelf software solutions, internet/intranet applications, and custom developed systems.

  • Team Development* - 15%

Assist in team development while holding teams accountable for their commitments, removing roadblocks to their work; leveraging organizational resources to improve capacity for project work; and mentoring and developing team members.

Promote empowerment of the team, ensure that each team member is fully engaged in the project and making a meaningful contribution, and encourage a sustainable pace with high-levels of quality for the team.

Technology Expertise - 30%

Act as an expert in a particular field of knowledge [this may be a business/functional area and/or a particular technology] and provide detailed information and advice as necessary in that specialization in order to achieve business outcomes.

Develop and/or promote technical solutions which support the business requirements within their area of expertise. Be accountable for specific deliverables in relation to software or web development and/or support.

As needed, lead the technical activity within their area of specialization.

Product Owner Support - 15%

Support the Head of Technology Enablement/Customer Enablement in managing customer expectations for project deliverables, managing stakeholder communications, and helping to implement an effective system of project governance.

Engage closely with clients to understand what business objectives they want to accomplish through technology enablement and then work with the Customer Enablement team of developers and designers to bring those ideas to life.

Knowledge / Skills

Knowledge:

Focus will be on creating, expanding, and maintaining GIS tools, database tools, and web/mobile applications within an Agile environment.

Experience in geospatial data analytics and developed geoprocessing tools in the field of Water Resources, Transportation, Meteorology, Climate, Catastrophic Flood Modeling, Satellite Imagery, Remote Sensing, LiDAR, Radar, IFSAR, Web Applications, and 3D Simulations.

Knowledge of digital technologies and applicability for the water and wastewater industries focused primarily in one technology specialty area.

Demonstrated ability to apply these technology specialties to solve practical problems in a high-tech development environment with multifunction teams for large, complex systems with minimal direction.

Experience providing rapid prototyping for customer products and new product ideas.

Demonstrated ability to analyze product requirements, conduct feasibility planning, and advise on alternative approaches to achieving objectives.

  • Skills:*

Experience with Java, JavaScript , C# , VB.Net , Python and HTML5.

Experience with open source GIS frameworks, full Esri product stack and mobile development platforms.

Experience with databases like MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL.

Experience with PostGIS for PostgreSQL, Geoprocessing and Python.

Experience with QGIS, GeoServer, MapServer, and other open source frameworks for both desktop and server.

Experience with Data Visualization for the web, Google Chart & Map API, LATEX, Statistical Package – R, Matlab, Octave, Flowmaster, Culvertmaster, Geopak Drainage, Geographic Standards – OGC, WFS, WMS.
