BMO Financial Group Associate - Financial Advisory Services in Chicago, Illinois


The Associate is responsible for providing structural alternatives on new client credit and capital markets opportunities and performing advanced financial modeling and analysis for highly complex deals. The Associate will develop sophisticated analytics and customized presentations to support the execution of corporate finance advisory assignments within the Commercial Bank. As part of an ongoing team approach to best serve and manage clients and prospects, the Associate will be accountable for identifying and recommending related ancillary investment and corporate banking solutions to clients. Associates gain increasing scope of ownership of relationships both inside and outside of the Bank and are expected to generate original ideas and have a meaningful impact on the outcome of corporate finance assignments.

A. Client Relationship Management

  • Prepare capital structure alternatives and support new credit and capital markets opportunities.

  • Network internally with client relationship managers to educate on product offering and elevate the visibility of the group.

  • Create pitch books for clients with respect to financial solutions and participate in their presentation to clients.

  • Directly manage diverse corporate finance assignments involving public, private and middle market companies.

  • Perform activities in line with Associate role and business initiatives that will increase knowledge and experience; work toward gaining increased scope of ownership of advisory assignments.

B. Credit Risk & Structuring Analysis

  • Recommend appropriate capital structure and market based financing terms in corporate finance situations.

  • Provide client with transaction structuring alternatives. Examples include general knowledge of asset purchase structures, stock purchase structures, 338(h)(10) elections, purchase price adjustments, earn-out provisions, escrow agreements, warrants, seller notes and ESOPs.

  • Conduct due diligence that includes on-site client visits, analysis of business models, and comprehensive review of industry trends and related regulations.

C. Financial Modeling and Analysis

  • Utilize financial analysis to proactively identify opportunities to cross-sell.

  • Generate updated financial models/ analyses as business needs and industry requirements dictate.

  • Create advanced financial models for use in analyzing client situations.

D. Partnership Efforts

  • Coordinate with BMO Capital Markets in gathering relevant data and market intelligence applicable to advisory assignments.

  • Leverage internal resources including research, production and desktop services to develop high quality, customized presentations for clients and prospects.

  • Participate in deal teams to develop, present and win mandates for new opportunities.

  • Initiate contact with partnered Investment Banking Group areas for new client situations.

  • Play leadership role on transactions by understanding the scope of BMO product offerings and bringing the necessary groups and expertise into a situation as needed

  • An undergraduate degree in finance, economics, accounting or direct work experience in a related field.

  • 2-4 years of experience in investment banking, consulting, commercial banking, audit or similar field

  • Knowledge of capital markets, investment banking products (including, but not limited to mergers & acquisitions, recapitalizations, capital structure, valuation techniques and private equity markets).

  • Individuals continue in an Associate capacity between 3-5 years with growing responsibility.


  • Highly proficient in quantitative analytics, financial modeling and credit analysis.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Expertise in computer applications including MS Excel and Powerpoint. Strong proficiency in other Microsoft Office products.

  • Strong interpersonal skills within a demanding team environment and in interactions directly with clients.

  • Must work with limited supervision.

  • Must learn and adapt quickly.

  • Must anticipate the needs of senior professionals and respond accordingly

  • Excellent capability to independently and proactively service multiple clients.
