Professional Transition Advisors (PTA) are top performing financial professionals with 3 to 10 years of industry experience, a definable book of business and/or significant relationship network. As a member of the Merrill Lynch Wealth Management PTA program, you will join a select group of quality advisors who are passionate about helping people navigate their full financial lives and serious about growing their practice and accelerating their own professional growth. The PTA program offers the support and training to grow assets under management and acquire new clients by leveraging the services and capabilities of Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

The PTA is a fully licensed, entrepreneurial professional who:

  • Analyzes and determines client needs, financial resources and objectives

  • Formulates and executes client acquisition strategies

  • Advises clients on financial strategies and financial products

  • Implements solutions agreed to by the client

  • Reviews progress toward the client goals & objectives

  • Directs and oversees resources and activities to run an effective wealth management practice that meets business goals

  • Strictly adheres to compliance and industry regulations

  • Formulates and conducts marketing strategies to develop and enhance client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a client acquisition plan with specific targets and strategies to engage in consistent activities using available tools and resources

  • Implement client acquisition and marketing plans and use available resources for client tracking

  • Prospect activities to develop new client relationships including telemarketing solicitation, seminars, community, professional and social networking, referrals and direct mail, with the goal of generating qualified leads

  • Recommend investment products and services that are suitable for prospects and clients based on their objectives, resources, time horizon, risk profile, and preferences

  • Analyze, review and adjust client portfolios to measure progress toward goals

  • Deliver an appropriate level of service over the lifetime of the client relationship based on the needs and level of sophistication of the client situation

  • Plan and manage resources (time, people, budget) to run a productive practice, on both a day-to-day and longer-term plan

  • Stay informed of industry product trends and issues

  • Complete mandated training and continuing education requirements as requested

  • Act as a resource to other Financial Advisors and office personnel


  • 3 to 10 years of experience in financial services serving in roles including: financial advisors, independent advisors, bank advisors, call center advisors, insurance professionals and other licensed financial services professionals

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Proven relationship building ability to engage with and influence others

  • Strong business partnering skills; willingness to work collaboratively on a team and with key partners

  • Highly entrepreneurial, goal and results oriented

  • Proven ability to assess needs of clients and recommend appropriate solutions/interventions

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher strongly preferred

  • Fully registered licensed broker

License Requirements

Series 7 and 66 registrations are required. Additional licenses may also be required for this position dependent upon the state(s) in which the PTA does business. Incumbents are required to complete certain continuing education requirements. PTAs are also encouraged to continue their professional development in pursuit of acceptable external professional designations.
