The Senior Manager is expected to manage and advise on the preparation and presentation of information necessary for the accurate and timely completion of corporate tax requirements and processes. Expectations include research and analysis of complex transactions including presentation of conclusions to senior management. The Senior Tax Manager could be expected to work on and manage matters that would include: tax compliance, tax research, transaction work such as mergers and acquisitions, tax audits, tax planning projects, tax legislative activities and tax accounting matters.
The Senior Manager’s day-to-day responsibilities will be developing, researching, assessing and enabling new strategies for the investments department. This role will also involve consulting with investment teams on a broad array of economic, tax, accounting and structuring considerations. Strong collaboration with other internal subject matter experts and external advisors will be critical to this role. The Senior Manager should be able to quickly assimilate complex issues, resolve conflicts, evaluates trade-offs and influence decisions in a timely manner. The Senior Manager should have an advanced understanding of investment tax principles. In addition, they must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills and be able to discuss complex issues at the appropriate level of detail for their target audience.
In alignment with corporate goals, specific responsibilities for the Senior Manager will include:
Act as a thought leader and SME on the taxation of Investments;
Follow investment trends and changes in tax law to identify potential new opportunities and strategies
Assess and help others understand the impact of portfolio turnover and holding period on economic returns
Provide leverage to the investment teams so they can focus on transaction underwriting, execution and portfolio monitoring and management, including:
Manage the identification and resolution of key issues in a timely and effective manner; including with respect to the structuring of new or complex investments
Advise on tax consequences and potential pitfalls of proposed investments and transactions
Provide due diligence support on direct and other unique investments; primarily through reviewing, discussing and forming a view on potential tax considerations
8+ years of experience working in an investments taxation. Relevant organization may include insurance companies, private equity firms, “Big Four” accounting firms (in a tax compliance or advisory capacity) and other private asset managers;
Detailed knowledge and understanding of tax rules related to investments, and how these rules relate within an insurance company reporting framework;
Detailed knowledge of the tax implications of different equity investment structures (e.g. limited partnerships, LLCs and Corporations);
Experience with merger and acquisition projects.
Advanced organizational and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines;
Flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances; and
Advanced problem solving and decision-making skills.
Bachelor's Degree, in Accounting or Tax
A CPA, Masters in Tax or Law Degree with tax specialty preferred
Investment and / or financial services experience required, with insurance industry experience preferred
