Kaiser Permanente Otolaryngology Physician Assistant - Head and Neck Surgery (Sunnybrook Medical Offices) in Clackamas, Oregon

Provide high quality health care to Kaiser Permanente members in a cost effective manner and in accordance with accepted professional practice standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide direct assessment, diagnosis and formulation/implementation of treatment plan for patients presenting with Otolaryngology conditions. Outpatient responsibilities include consultations, histories and physicals, preoperative exams, ordering diagnostic studies and medications, performing office procedures, screening referrals, scheduling surgeries, and post-operative follow-up. Significant time is spent handling patient inquiries regarding preoperative, intra-operative and post-operative care.- Provide inpatient care by rounding on Otolaryngology surgical patients during mornings and weekends. Responsibilities include writing post-operative orders, charting follow-up notes, changing dressings, removing sutures. Dictate discharge summaries and write discharge orders for follow-up care in the clinic. Hand off patients to the clinic staff for transition of care. Performs other duties as requested.- Provide surgical services as a first assistant on occasion as needed.- All care must be documented in patient's outpatient and inpatient medical record(s)in accordance with accepted KP and medical/legal standards. All medical care must be provided in accordance with accepted practice standards, hospital/clinic protocols, and State licensing guidelines.

Basic Qualifications:Experience- N/AEducation- Graduate of approved Physician Assistant program or equivalent requirements to meet State licensure.License, Certification, Registration- Licensed in Oregon and Washington. Requires license and DEA certification in primary state (Oregon or Washington) prior to first day of employment. Must obtain secondary license and DEA certification within 6 months of hire.- National PA certification, state medical license, prescribing registration at time of hire.- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers required upon hire/transfer.- National Provider Identifier (NPI) required prior to employment start date. Additional Requirements:- Working knowledge of Otolaryngologic diseases and injuries and their treatment.- Working knowledge of procedural techniques, with particular emphasis on Otolaryngology techniques.- Working knowledge of state health care laws, licensing board regulations and controlled substance regulations. Important to know limitations and when to refer patients to the Otolaryngologist.- Ability to assess, diagnose and plan effective treatment for Otolaryngologic diseases and injuries.- Ability to see large volume of patients, and to interface with physicians and support staff.- Skills to include: Safe tissue handling and retraction techniques. Suturing of deep and superficial tissues. Control of bleeding. Application of post op dressing.- Writing post-op orders. Post-op protocols for blood transfusions, fluid balance, oral intake, bowel and urinary care, IV narcotic and other pain management. Post-op protocols for care of surgical patients.- Knowledge of UM requirements for hospitals. Understanding of capabilities of ancillary and support services both IP and OP.- Knowledge of documentation and coding requirements for both IP and OP.- Ability to learn the following: Recognition of normal and abnormal Head and Neck anatomy. Performance of scope exams to include: otomicroscopy, flexible nasopharygoscopy, rigid nasal endoscopy. Performance of minor surgical procedures on the face and neck.

Preferred Qualifications:- Two (2) year of clinical experience in an Otolaryngology setting, or equivalent hospital and/or surgical experience.- Two (2) year of surgical experience, with emphasis on Otolaryngology procedures.
