This is an exciting opportunity in Columbus Indiana for an Electronic Hardware Technical Advisor. Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of hardware architecture, electrical design balancing functionality, unit cost, and schedule. Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.

This position creates electronic hardware that is integral to Cummins’ products. People in these positions will typically develop and validate electronic control units for Cummins’ engine and aftertreatment products. Creates, manages, improves and applies electronic hardware development processes and tools. Processes include problem solving techniques (5 phase, 7 step, 8D or similar), design for EMC robustness, design for manufacturing, familiarity with electronic hardware development process, requirements analysis. Tools include circuit simulation (Saber, Cadence PSpice, or equivalent), DFMEA/PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), schematic capture, PCB layout (Mentor Graphics, Zuken, or equivalent),

Provides problem resolution leadership. Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems. Investigates electronic hardware problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, implements problem resolution and documents results.

Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist in a discipline or product area with responsibility for developing local talent. Responsible for review of less-experienced developers/testers’ work to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design. Responsible for coaching and developing the next generation of technical experts. Coaches other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.

May also include academic or industry collaboration in a complementary or similar discipline area.



Design and Application of Digital Electronics - Specifies components and architectures of electronic control units; applies electronic control units in Cummins' products.

Product Verification and Validation Management - Coordinates the development of design verification and system validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes while managing risk and relative priority; evaluates analytical and experimental test results following engineering principles to verify that products meet internal technical requirements and to validate that design solutions meet customer needs; produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.


Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is preferred with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s).

Current Product Support Technical Project Leader for Design-In-House products.

  • Lead projects (Value Package Change (VPC)) in response to customer requests, obsolescence and quality improvements. Act as the PM/TPL, owning planning through implementation across functions, not just within CE-Product Engineering. Own scope, timing and costs.

  • Deliver quotations to customer requests with costs, timing and test plans.

  • Key contact for customers (Engine business, Cummins Emissions Solutions).

  • Plan annual budget, balance work, and map 5-year plan.

  • Manage resources per PPN, ownership of resource allocation, financial simulation.

  • Interface with other departments (DIH - Design, Technical Foundations) to accomplish product changes.

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
