The Cummins Advanced Analytics organization uses the latest methods and technologies in statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to take on major challenges and opportunities for Cummins and our customers. We help our customers achieve greater equipment uptime and lower cost of operation, while optimizing internal company operations like engineering and manufacturing. Our advanced analytics algorithms and models are becoming a core part of Cummins physical and digital products every day.

This is an exciting opportunity in Columbus, Indiana for a Quality Analytics Data Engineer - Tech Specialist.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

Solves complex analytical problems using quantitative approaches through a combination of analytical, mathematical and technical skills. Researches, designs, implements and validates complex algorithms to analyze diverse sources of data to achieve targeted outcomes by leveraging complex statistical and predictive modeling concepts.

Participates in projects to support key objectives and business goals through the use of data science methodology

Leverages advanced analytics and data science to solve complex business problems

Creates multiple algorithms using complex statistical methodologies through the use of statistical programming languages and tools

Partners with domain experts to verify model capabilities

Partners with IT resources to enable appropriate data flow/data model, development using appropriate tools/technology, rapid prototyping and informs the design of analytical products

Partners with less experienced employees on data science tools and methodologies


Skills and Experience Required:


Laboratory Equipment Safety - Evaluates hazards specific to laboratory test equipment that may result from fuels, kinetic energy, toxins, electrical or other risks in the test environment; analyzes risk factors and potential impacts to personnel and property; applies appropriate techniques or safeguards to mitigate risks; collaborates with various laboratory areas to understand risks within a facility or site.

Function Based Product Testing of "X" - Selects appropriate equipment and techniques to operate the product and record operational data in a hardware or software based testing environment most often required as part of a product verification or validation plan; evaluates quality and validity of measurement data; analyzes test results using accepted standards to characterize product capabilities in alignment with the requirements of the engineer responsible for making product decisions.

Laboratory Planning - Formulates longer-term capabilities and capacity needs based on customer testing requirements; selects from available technologies to meet and sustain capability and capacity requirements; defines appropriate manpower and skills required to operate the lab.

Laboratory Work Flow Management - Evaluates manpower, equipment and material needs to meet short to mid-term test demand; designs laboratory layout and process flows to maximize efficiency and minimize waste; allocates resources on a daily basis to efficiently meet test demand.

Data Quality - Identifies, understands and corrects flaws in data that supports effective information governance across operational business processes and decision making.

Laboratory Management - Leads technical resources while managing the business aspects of a laboratory using measure to control both the technical and business aspects of the organization and assuring the requirements of the appropriate certifications and/or accreditations are met.

Decision quality - Making good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward.

Drives results - Consistently achieving results, even under tough circumstances.

Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.

Builds networks - Effectively building formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organization.

Resourcefulness - Securing and deploying resources effectively and efficiently.

Manages complexity - Making sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.

Lead and support Data Engineering work specific to Quality Analytics.


  • Experience with R, Python, Excel-VBA

  • Strong background in mathematics and statistics and also Agile Project Management

  • Smoothing techniques

  • Experience with clustering, machine learning, predictive analytics and correlation studies

  • Familiarity with: parallel processing, agile methodology, Microsoft Azure

  • Visualization software such as Tableau is helpful

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology required.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
