Summary:

  • The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs the full range of repair and modification work on diesel and gasoline vehicles heavy equipment and railroad equipment to include but not limited to; commercial, non-tactical, tactical and tracked vehicles, passenger cars and trucks, forklift trucks, warehouse tractors, large material handling equipment, generators, trailers, multi-wheel drive vehicles, and locomotives, with standard or automatic transmissions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all maintenance actions in accordance with AR 750-1, Army Materiel Maintenance Policy, and conducted in accordance with The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS) as outlined in DA PAM 750-8, DA PAM 750-1, AR 710-2, DA PAM 710-2-2, applicable LIS publications, other Governmental regulations and directives as applicable, installation policies and procedures, and accepted industry standards for the safe and efficient operation of equipment repair and supporting functions.

  • Repair and maintain equipment to include but not limited to material handling equipment, generators, locomotives, semi-trucks, light trailers, flat trailers, bomb carts, and Conex haulers.

  • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and drawings.

  • Perform scheduled maintenance, such as cleaning and lubricating parts.

  • Diagnose and identify malfunctions, using computerized tools and equipment.

  • Inspect, repair, and replace defective or worn parts, such as bearings, pistons, and gears.

  • Overhaul and test major components, such as engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.

  • Disassemble and reassemble heavy equipment and components.

  • Travel to worksites to repair large equipment, such as cranes Heavy vehicles and mobile equipment, including construction and railroad transportation.

  • Performs Field and Limited Sustainment Level maintenance on gasoline and diesel fueled equipment and their associated components.

  • Troubleshoots, inspects, test, repairs, adjusts and replaces malfunctioning equipment or components.

  • Enters faults and corrective actions in the maintenance records and verifies that all work is performed satisfactorily.

  • Maintains power assisted brake systems, vehicle suspension systems, vehicle wheel/hub assemblies, vehicle mechanical (manual) steering systems, vehicle hydraulic (power) steering systems, vehicle crane/hoist/winch assemblies, vehicle exhaust systems, cooling systems, starting systems, charging systems, electrical systems, transmission assemblies, transfer assemblies, axle assemblies, drum brake systems, hydraulic brake systems, air/hydraulic brake systems, fifth wheel assemblies, and material handling equipment hydraulic systems.

  • Adjusts and makes repairs to maintain operation of machines and equipment and determine cause of malfunction or defects and repairs or replaces worn, damaged, or defective parts.

  • Assist in the repairs and installs of mechanical equipment aboard watercrafts, tests, repairs, and rebuilds components as required.

  • Conducts services, inspections, diagnose faults and makes repairs to 120-ton diesel-electric locomotives and Maintenance of Way (MOW) equipment.

  • Operate Fuel Truck during fueling operations.

  • Perform welding and minor body repair.

  • May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, week-ends, and holidays.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications : (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • High School graduate or equivalent with military or civilian training in heavy equipment maintenance.

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a heavy equipment mechanic.

  • Experience on Railroad equipment with ability to operate, conduct services, inspections, diagnose faults and makes repairs to 120-ton diesel-electric locomotives and Maintenance of Way (MOW) equipment, preferred.

  • Must possess and maintain a current California Driver’s License.

  • Must be able to pass a National Agency Check (NAC) for computer access.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have a combination of experience to repair engines, transmissions, transfers, hydraulic, air brakes, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance systems of moderate difficulty.

  • Perform welding and minor body repair.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.

  • During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
