BRIEF DESCRIPTION The primary role of the Senior Underwriter is to work with the Account Teams, exercising discretion and independent judgment, providing financial analysis and utilizing modeling tools to evaluate benefit programs and their impact on overall business objectives, including the management and control of client risks and losses. This individual will provide comprehensive underwriting services for large employers (3,000+ lives) with a primary focus on life, accident, disability and absence management programs including: Basic and Supplemental Life, Basic and Voluntary AD&D, FMLA Leave Administration, Salary Continuance/Short Term Disability plan administration and insurance, Statutory Disability, Paid Time Off programs and Long Term Disability. In addition, the Senior Underwriter will have responsibility of providing guidance and mentoring to the Underwriters and Underwriting Associates.

This position is in the Absence, Disability and Life Practice of the Financial Services and Underwriting Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include, but are not limited, to the following:

Prepare plan design and financial analysis for existing and prospective customers by utilizing modeling tools and various reporting techniques;

Perform advanced underwriting, financial, and risk analysis support for sales and account management teams and their respective Absence, Disability and Life clients;

Perform the analysis and negotiation of rates and plan options with insurers on behalf of clients to secure optimal, cost-competitive benefit plans;

Responsible for clients’ benefits marketing process, such as: data acquisition, request for proposal (RFP) preparation, vendor question resolution, proposal review and analysis, and client exhibit and presentation preparation;

Validate renewals and proposals for accuracy; Preform various reporting for plan change evaluation in line with client strategy along with reserve & budget calculation, and other on-going reviews;

Responsible for the evaluation, determination and recommendation of alternative coverage, pricing options, and plan design changes based on economic analysis of available plan elements related to client goals; Actively participate in prospective client data analysis and presentations; Lead and conduct special underwriting projects; Assist in the development of best practices for the underwriting division; Develop and present underwriting training programs; Mentor less experience staff members and perform quality reviews; Maintain quality service standards and organization to assure timely service to Trion team;

Research and remain abreast of the dynamic, competitive insurance environment, new and complex insurance projects, appropriate underwriting techniques and constantly changing legislation that governs business. QualificationsREQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Actuary, Mathematics and/or other related field is required; Minimum of 5 to 8 years’ experience in the Benefits Brokerage, Consulting, or Insurance industry is preferred; Advanced working knowledge of MS Excel is required (i.e. ability to perform pivot tables, macros, and intermediate formulas); Effective analytical, math and problem solving skills, sound judgment, strong decision making ability, confidence to make difficult decisions and excellent communication skills; Must be organized, detail oriented and able to translate big picture ideas into client objectives.
