AutoZone Communications & Community Relations Director in Corporate Office, United States

Position Summary:

The Director of Communication and Community Relations is a visible and influential position for the success of AutoZone. This position will work with internal AutoZone partners and external community partners and through these combined efforts, will work towards helping AutoZone reach our goals.

Job Responsibilities - Other duties may be assigned:

Strategic Communications

  • Create communication plans that consider all audiences and are aligned with company priorities and messaging

  • Lead the Communications Council (representatives from all areas of the company)

  • Maintain the communications contact list throughout the organization for communication distribution purposes

  • Implement and measure communication plans to ensure integration and consistency of messaging among all audiences

  • Develop key messages and a variety of communications to help drive engagement with the business and the company’sculture

  • Proactively work with intranet and extranet content owners to enhance content and increase usability

  • Understand current technologies including social media in an effort to incorporate technologies into communication strategies

  • Serve on cross-functional teams, as assigned

Community Relations

  • Manage the grant management process to include financial grants and in-kind program

  • Oversee AutoZoner programs: matching gift, volunteers, internal giving campaigns, fundraising

  • Engage AutoZoners in the Memphis community through the promotion and education of community organizations and initiatives

  • Market / promote company sponsorships to solicit AutoZoner support and attendance

  • Maintain community relations’ policies

Writing, Editing, Photography and Graphic Design

  • Research, report and write articles for various mediums: company news, functional areas, programs and priorities

  • Edit content submitted by communication partners for publishing

  • Write internal communications on numerous topics to support all company functional areas

  • Write for a variety of media, including the web, video, email newsletters, brochures, etc.

  • Edit company publications

  • Format, draft and edit PowerPoint presentations, as requested

  • Maintain and develop content for portals:,, SSC Intranet and enterprise portal

Meeting and Events

  • Create, design, seek alignment and/or implement company events – starting line, quarterly meetings, national sales meeting; other events as appropriate

Media Relations

  • Respond to media inquiries

  • Draft press releases, or route them through the policy process

  • Ensure a solid distribution process to all AutoZone locations

  • Represent business relations on the Emergency Response Team and Crisis Communications Team, in critical situations

  • Maintain crisis communications and media relations policies

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has two direct reports

Skills and Requirements:

  • Candidate should possess at least 5 years of corporate communications experience to include media and community relations.

  • Knowledge of current trends in corporate communications

  • Strong understanding of and an extensive community relationships in the Memphis area

  • Ability to work with all levels throughout the organization including senior management

  • Proven ability to adapt and succeed in a fast-paced environment.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, including excellent editing and proofreading skills with a strong orientation to detail and experience using Associated Press Style Guide

  • Project management

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Understanding of basic photography and graphic design principles

  • Meeting and event management a plus
