IBM Learning Designer (Instructional Design) in Dallas, Texas

Your Role and Responsibilities

This position can be based in one of our strategic HR Hubs: Armonk, NY; New York, NY; Boston, MA; or Atlanta, GA.

IBM’s Leadership, Learning and Inclusion (LL&I) organization is seeking a curious and creative Learning Experience Designer responsible for developing innovative learning offerings and improving existing offerings for IBMers worldwide. You will be skilled in adult learning principles, effective instruction approaches, needs analysis, agile methods, education trends, and interactive design.

As a Learning Experience Designer, you will design content across the full LL&I portfolio, including Agile Academy; Leadership and Manager Development; Sales and Industry Learning; Leadership Assessment; Organizational Development; Technical Leadership Development; and Diversity and Inclusion. You will collaborate with consultants, offering managers, technologists, subject matter experts, delivery teams, and other instructional designers to create learning experiences that demonstrate sound adult learning strategies, produce desired learning outcomes, and develop targeted skills and behaviors among learners.

Our work is done in an agile, iterative fashion, with a mix of collaborative team ideation and focused, self-directed design time. The ideal candidate thrives and succeeds in a very collaborative, fast-paced environment with competing priorities, enjoys solving challenging problems on a global scale, excels at translating insights into business recommendations and brings pride and passion to their work.


  • Design end to end learning solutions (e-learning, instructor-led: face to face and virtual, and self-paced) that incorporate best practices in adult learning theory, neuroscience and leadership.

  • Develop all relevant materials related to program roll-out, including learner materials, pilots, and facilitator enablement.

  • Maintain a balance of innovation and experimentation with sound adult learning theory and instructional design principles.

  • Scope and estimate level of effort for project deliverables

  • Develop insights from multiple sources of data and feedback about how our programs perform to continually improve them.

  • Conduct independent research and interviews with subject matter experts and translate findings into cogent and compelling learning content.

  • Facilitate pilots with audiences of all levels of leadership.

  • Edit and perform quality assurance (QA) on your own work

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • At least 5 years of experience as an instructional designer, UX designer, interaction designer, product designer or similar discipline.

  • Bachelor's or equivalent degree in instructional design, human-computer interaction, user experience design, user-centered research, behavioral science, or training and development.

  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills.

  • Solid understanding of Agile methodology, Responsive Design principles, and Instructional Application design.

  • Adept and efficient at designing learning offerings in response to a given business problem.

  • Proficient in Visual Design, Video Production and editing, copy writing is preferred.

  • Skilled with graphic tools and authoring tools.

  • Experience with directing video shoots and managing vendors in developing multimedia content.

  • Ability to work independently and switch gears due to the demand of the business in order to meet new deadlines.

  • A portfolio that showcases digital and face-to-face learning offerings.
