Placement - Service Engineer

You will received on the job training and take part in a structured Training & Development Programme designed to give the skills and competencies required for future graduate roles.

The role of Power Systems Service Engineer Placement Student will be to support current product issue investigation to reach clear understanding of customer issues and work with a cross-functional team to provide short term and long term solutions.

  • Actively participate on cross-functional problem solving teams

  • Responsible for issue investigation and short term countermeasure for assigned projects

  • Technical liaison between the Cummins field service organisation and the Engineering, Quality, and manufacturing departments to identify, define and prioritise product problems and implement short term solutions

  • Participate in component teardown and failure analysis to assist Field Service, Warranty and Engineering with problem definitions. Document and publish findings in technical reports

  • Utilise analytical and engine diagnostic tools to identify trends in field failure data, analyse engine operation data and launch investigations for emerging product issues

  • Create and maintain technical field service publications

  • Excellent written/verbal communications and project management skills.

  • Understanding and/or interest in learning about engines and components

  • Capable of integrating into a team working environment


  • Working towards a BEng/MEng Honours degree in Mechanical, Automotive or equivalent discipline

  • Knowledge of MS Office (Excel/Word/Powerpoint). Knowledge on other tools like Minitab preferred but not required

The role will provide excellent experience for your CV and an introduction to a Service Engineering role in industry. A mentor will be there to guide you through your placement year. The following training will be provided;

  • Training in Corporate systems such as Oracle, and familiarisation with other business software (such as Insite Diagnostic tool, etc)

  • Tools and skills training around failure analysis, engine teardown procedure, six sigma methodology, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Power Systems engine application course.

  • Coaching to enable the development of other business skills

  • 4 x 1 day workshops through an external training provider: Adapting to Professional Environments, Effective Communication and Presentation Skills, Team Work, Customer Care.

  • Internal Placement and Graduate Networks
