Position Summary: The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager is responsible for planning, supervising and evaluating daily operations of the Sterile Processing locations for Presbyterian St. Luke’s and Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, ensuring that all activities are conducted in a cost-effective and efficient manner and are compliant with manufacturer recommendations, professional standards, internal policies/standards/procedures and applicable regulatory requirements. Applies professional standards to employee supervision, continuous performance improvement, safety/risk management and quality. Work is strongly focused on identifying/ensuring customer service/patient satisfaction through timely and effective infection control processes, sterility and product availability. Serves as the SME and resource for PSL processing needs. Works collaboratively with other departments to ensure efficient, safe and effective instrument availability. Train, supervise, and evaluate the sterile processing employees. Responsible for monitoring/controlling expenses, maintaining costs with approved budget parameters and overseeing the department annual inventory.

Responsibilities include:

1) overseeing instrument inventory management, including maintenance/use of associated technology for instrument management, tracking and reporting; 2) ensuring optimum staffing levels for all shifts; 3) supervising staff performing work; 4) participating in vendor/contract management; and 5) troubleshooting/resolving issues escalated to first-level management.

Work requires advanced knowledge of surgical instrument and power systems for all types of surgical procedures, and the standards, processes and equipment relating to collection, decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments, trays, and equipment. Also requires knowledge of current science-based literature for instrument maintenance, sterilization, disinfection and management.

Essential Duties

  • Manages and evaluates the operations/services of the sterile processing to ensure that all activities are conducted in a timely/cost-effective manner and in accordance with organizational values, internal policies/standards/procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements;

  • Modifies work-flow processes and auditing functions as necessary to improve performance/productivity and customer service;

  • Ensures that work unit activities, productivity and quality indicators are tracked and documented;

  • Troubleshoots emergent issues and resolves per established guidelines;

  • Ensures that appropriate automated systems are maintained;

  • Produces reports on key performance indices and other significant benchmarking metrics as required;

  • Collaborates with other departments to address and resolve problems;

  • Share information and enhance overall effectiveness/productivity;

  • Schedules, supervises and evaluates the work of assigned staff engaged in sterilizing/processing equipment/supplies and in setting up surgical instrument trays in accordance with established procedures; Assists in identifying adequate staffing levels for appropriate coverage to meet budgetary and operational objectives;

  • Adjusts staffing ass needed during shifts to meet customer needs;

  • Interviews and makes employment and other personnel decisions;

  • Orients employees and holds regular staff meetings; develops and delivers ongoing staff education; approves timecards; communicates performance standards and evaluates performance;

  • Counsels employees, providing constructive feedback and recognizing results achieved; participate in performance management activities;

  • Interprets and ensures compliance with applicable external;/internal an legal and regulatory agreements, standards and requirements;

  • Receives/reviews audits and survey reports/findings to determine appropriate changes or corrective action required;

  • Keeps abreast of changing regulatory requirements/regulations and competitive industry practices impacting assigned functions, including organizational initiatives/changes; monitors impact on existing activities and identifies/implements effective response/solution while maintaining acceptable service levels and work quality;

  • Monitors and assess current operations/services to identify opportunities and provide recommendations to Director for performance/process improvements initiatives;

  • Monitors and assures compliance with safety, regulatory, sterility standards, and inventory control procedures; implements changes and ensures staff receive the necessary training.

Position Requirements:

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • ISCHSMM or CBSPD certification within one year of hire.

Education:

  • Associates degree or occupational specific training beyond high school.

Experience:

  • Four years of progressively responsible SPD or OR work experience, including one year in a ‘lead’ or supervisory capacity.
