Job Description

As a Hand Therapist you will evaluate and treat patients with hand/wrist/elbow injuries using physical, chemical and mechanical means in accordance with written and signed prescription and/or referral of a state licensed physician or authorized practitioner and maintain complete medical records for each patient.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Administers direct patient care in accordance with the written and signed prescription of the referring physician or other State authorized practitioner.

  • Designs and implements a treatment plan that best meets the needs of the patient and works toward achieving established goals.

  • Develops and implements treatment plans to improve gross and fine motor coordination, movement and function of upper extremities.

  • Fabricates custom splint/orthosis, as required/prescribed.

  • Facilitates the use of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and instructs patient in use and protocols for dealing with malfunction of same. Makes appropriate recommendations for follow-up care upon discharge

  • Instructs patient and caregivers in daily living skills including, but not limited to: dressing, feeding and household activities in order to promote a more independent and self-sufficient level of functioning.

  • Observes patient tolerance and/or status during treatment and modifies treatment program, as needed.

  • Responds to established department emergency procedures for patient safety and care, when necessary.

  • Follows all documentation guidelines and submits required documentation in accordance with the policies and procedures of the department.

  • Participates in quality improvement chart reviews and activities.

  • Attends family meetings/conferences and interacts with members of the inter-disciplinary team pertaining to the welfare and management of assigned patients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy, required. Master's Degree, preferred.

  • Current license as a Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist in New York State

  • Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), strongly preferred.
