Role Summary:

Church & Dwight Co., Inc. seeks a full-time Senior Patent Paralegal with at least five (5) years of experience as a patent paralegal to join its legal department. The Senior Patent Paralegal’s primary role will be assisting with various patent and contract related tasks. The person in this role is expected to work closely with Church & Dwight’s legal team to accomplish the overall objectives of the legal department. This position reports to the Associate General Counsel - Patent Counsel and is located at its R&D center in Princeton, NJ.


  • Patent Paralegal Work: An important part of the role is assisting with the patent team’s freedom to operate assessments including receiving and tracking requests from R&D for patent freedom to operate assessments, requesting patent searches, facilitating review sessions, and assisting patent counsel in the preparation of opinions. Other patent paralegal work may include:

  • Review and respond as appropriate to incoming correspondence from the USPTO and all foreign agents

  • Update the patent database as necessary and review the patent docket to ensure that filing and other deadlines are met

  • Prepare formal papers and coordinate with R&D and outside counsel in the preparation, filing and prosecution of domestic and international patent applications

  • Review and approve bills from patent related vendors; prepare budget/forecast reports in Serengeti or other software

  • Review and approve product packaging and labeling for appropriate marking of patent information and maintain any company website containing patent marking information

  • Review and prepare correspondence, documentation and recording of patent chain-of-title resulting from assignments, name changes, address changes, mergers, acquisitions and divestitures

  • Assist with patent due diligence, including but not limited to that related to confidential potential acquisitions; and other patent-related projects

  • Review patent estate in connection with required payment of patent annuities and maintenance fees

  • Provide support in regard to any patent litigation.

  • Contracts: Provide broad paralegal support to the patent team regarding technology-related contracts including receive and track contract requests; draft, review and revise contracts such as confidentiality agreements, contract amendments, contract extension letters, consulting agreements and license agreements; assist in educating the client group on contract procedures and policies; and interface with clients and counsel regarding the same.


  • A minimum of an associate’s degree, a paralegal certificate/license or equivalent education or experience is required; a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution is a plus

  • At least five (5) years of experience as a Patent Prosecution Paralegal while acquiring progressively more responsibility and independence in a corporate department or law firm

  • At least five (5) years of experience in a law firm or corporate department reviewing, editing and drafting IP related contracts such as confidentiality agreements and consulting agreements and interacting with client group

  • Proactive; will consider available options and decide optimum solutions to varied and unique problems

  • Solid knowledge of contract law and experience interacting directly with clients to offer practical, business oriented, time sensitive support

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and USPTO systems

  • Familiarity with patent docketing software, patent and trademark search programs and internet-based research, as well as updated knowledge of USPTO, PCT and foreign office patent filing requirements, formalities requirements and examination procedures
