Kaiser Permanente QC Lead Breast Imaging Specialist - Falls Church Medical Center in Falls Church, Virginia
Under the supervision of the Radiology Department's Supervisor and Mammography Services Manager, performs mammograms and breast biopsies following the guidelines of ACR and FDA. Utilizes departmental policies and procedures in meeting patient needs, adheres to proper quality utilization and risk management policies and practices, providing imaging procedures for patients of both genders and all ages as applicable.
Performs mammography and other related breast imaging procedures as per the Breast Imaging Specialist.
Performs and documents patient assessment/history related to procedures and provides patient care to meet patients' needs.
Assists physicians (radiologists, surgeons, other specialists) to perform image-guided diagnostic and invasive procedures (e.g.: stereotactic biopsy, needle localization. Galactograms).
Applies knowledge and principles of radiation protection to achieve radiation exposures ALARA for patients, self and others.
Applies knowledge and principles of Universal Precautions, aseptic and sterile techniques, to minimize exposure to/spread infectious organisms.
Maintains manual and computerized patient, department records.
Performs and documents equipment QC according to dept protocol: recognizes and reports any malfunction or variation to the mammography manager, maintenance or bio-med. Audits processing sensitometry records and other equipment/accessory QC data for compliance with policy and trends/problem identification.
Actively participates in QI/QM activities; identifies and responds to patient care in departmental situations that impact the quality of care and/or create risk.
Documents exception occurrences on appropriate forms to resolve QI/RM issues; prepares information necessary for completing monthly QA reports.
Provides practical instruction for student and other mammographers while demonstrating effective communicating and conflict resolution.
Records all patient history, procedures and imaging information.
Maintains QA /QC records as required by Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR). Acts as an internal consultant in relation to all regulatory compliance matters relating to breast imaging services.
Maintains close contact with mammography coordinators to ensure smooth operation of the mammography department.
Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures to include the use of specialized instrumentation, quality control requirements, and preventative maintenance.
Assesses medical and related equipment problems, taking appropriate corrective action when needed, including requesting repairs from outside entities.
Participates in the continuous quality improvement process.
Schedule mammographic procedures.
Collaborates with department supervisor in ensuring adherence to policy, procedures and protocols.
Responsible for the accuracy and quality of exams produced by technologist.
Checks technologist work to ensure procedural completeness within a reasonable length of time with minimal or no error in technique.
Instructs and trains new technologists to operate radiographic equipment until proficiency is established.
Trains existing staff in new or revised procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Monday-Friday with rotating weekends.
Three (3) years of experience as a radiographer with ARRT-M status, including one (1) year of experience with breast biopsy procedures required.
Must maintain ARRT-M status throughout employment.
Associate's degree or accredited hospital based Rad.Tech. Program required.
Graduation from an approved school of radiology required.
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) required.
Advanced certification in mammography (ARRTM) required.
Current BLS Certification from America Heart Association required.
Licensed in the State of Virginia required.
May be required to lift objects heavier than 50 pounds, perform difficult manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination skills, walk and stand for prolonged periods, see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises.
Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for 15 to 60 minutes at a time.
In order to work effectively with patients, must have effective interpersonal and communication skills and be able to stand, walk, bend, lift at least 50 pounds, hear, speak, and see.
