    The charge nurse is responsible for assigning patients to and monitoring the work of nurses within the unit on assigned shift and to assist the Clinical Coordinator/Supervisor in the supervision of assigned employees on the shift. The Charge Nurse is the first level of administration assigned to the unit in the absence of the Nursing Director/Manager and Clinical Coordinator/Supervisor. The position may also carry a patient load and applies the nursing process to deliver basic, safe, therapeutic care, for individuals or groups of patients. The Charge Nurse is assigned to a designated clinical area to assist in assuring a patient/family focused environment. Key role responsibilities include: coordinating patient throughput, demonstrating high standards of quality patient care, holding care providers accountable to clinical and service standards. Demonstrates and coaches others to utilize critical thinking skills. Works under the direction of the department leadership to develop, implement and evaluate systems that promote cost effective, quality patient care. Quality patient care is defined as care that is safe, effective, efficient, timely, equitable, patient-centered, and evidence based. Collaborates with other health care disciplines/ departments to maintain communication and provide optimal level of patient care .

Education: ADN, BSN preferred

Licensure/Certifications: Current Valid Kentucky Nursing License; BLS, and ACLS required. Department or other certification as suggested per Professional Association strongly encouraged within 2 years or per policy.

Experience: 1-2 years of previous charge nurse experience preferred. The charge nurse should have the ability to carry out all responsibilities in a thorough and timely manner and demonstrates expertise in area of clinical specialization. The charge nurse should also demonstrate excellent communication (verbal, written) interpersonal organizational, leadership, exceptional interpersonal relations and problems solving skills required.
