OVERVIEW: The Emergency Department Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is responsible for the provision of comprehensive clinical pharmacy services for the ED and all associated areas (eg. Pediatrics, Trauma, Urgent Care) including pharmacokinetic and therapeutic consultation.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator, Pharmacy Director, and Director of Emergency Department Services:

o Provide Pharmacy review of medication orders prior to administration as able. o Work collaboratively with other clinicians and health-care providers to implement and maintain innovative disease management programs and clinical pharmacy services. o Participate in the development of medication use management programs within the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center including core measures, clinical guidelines, critical pathways, disease management, and drug use programs. o Provides patient specific medication use teaching for discharge medications when appropriate. o Provides medication reconciliation to appropriate patients. o Focus on cost avoidance and cost savings due to medication use in the Emergency Department. o Actively participates in ED codes when available, assisting in running the medication portion of the code carts, providing medication related information and recommendations, dosing and preparing of emergency medications for immediate administration. o Participate in the professional development and competency of clinical staff. Functions as a role model and as an educational resource for pharmacy staff. o Facilitate proper information transfer with regard to medication use for patients converted to Inpatient registry from ED. o Participates collegially in the development of new programs, services and practices, in the education activities of the department and the management and administration of the department. o Keeps informed of all local, state and federal laws covering the storage, handling and dispensing of drugs. o Keeps informed of the action, side effects and proper usage of new drugs as they are made commercially available as well as of all investigational drugs being studied at this institution. o Maintains awareness of contemporary trends in the profession through the professional literature and regular attendance at professional organization meetings, institutes and seminars. o Participates in providing didactic and experiential training in Clinical Pharmacy for doctoral (PharmD) students. o Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS: • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in Virginia and meet the following criteria: • Doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) or equivalent experience • Successful completion of PGY-1 (Pharmacy practice or equivalent experience) • BLS, ACLS, and PALS or obtain within 3 months of hire • Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy Specialty or obtain within one year of hire • Well versed in medication management and pharmacology in the following areas: o Airway management, RSI/Post‐RSI sedation o Ambulatory Care o Cardiology o Critical Care o General Medicine o Infectious Diseases o Pediatrics o Procedural Sedation o Psychiatry o Toxicology/Drugs of Abuse/Overdose

HIGHLY DESIRED: • An understanding of medication-related quality measures applied in the emergency medicine setting • Some background in disaster management • Hospital experience
