This is an exciting opportunity in Galesburg, Michigan for a Technical Project Leader for Green House Gas Emissions.

  • Applies highly specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices to assigned areas and projects in the design, development, analysis and release of products and subsystems through the product life cycle.

  • Creates design specifications considering application, cost, weight, performance, product life, manufacture, assembly and service.

  • Verifies design using analysis and or functional testing, interprets results, drives decisions and assesses risk.

  • Works with other engineering disciplines and cross-functional disciplines to resolve product issues.

  • Evaluates customer needs and aligns requirements with identified customer expectations.

  • May fill the role of an assistant chief engineer, product readiness leader or project engineering leader.

  • Leads large or multiple engineering projects.

  • Performs as the local technical expert for one or more engineering specialties.

  • Solves complex problems impacting multiple projects.

  • Communicates with and influences key external stakeholders and business leaders.

  • Drives and manages system level requirements for projects or programs.

  • Makes critical program-related decisions.

  • Collaborates with industry peers within their discipline.

  • Advances the state of the practice for the technical discipline.

  • Sets strategic direction for a program or technical discipline.

  • Advises and transfers knowledge of engineering discipline; coaches and mentors less experienced engineers.

  • Advises leaders for resolution of complex business problems.

Skills and Experience Required:

Skills

Manufacturing Processes - Able to or experience with supporting manufacturing processes line changes including outsourcing, machining, assembly, and production test ensuring product quality needs are met while developing a repeatable, cost effective manufacturing process. Experience in working with purchasing to develop qualified suppliers and capable of developing or modifying sourcing standards.

Product Integration, Verification & Validation - Understands and applies processes, tools and skills involved in verifying and validating a solution to a problem, which is embodied in the statement of the requirements, has been developed. Testing is a multi-stage process that consists of activities for validating the product, from the most primitive elements up to the fully integrated system. The verification / validation includes activities such as component testing, integration testing, system testing, performance testing, acceptance testing, and installation testing.

Product Risk Management - User proficiency plus leadership experience in risk mgmt. methods and tools used within Cummins. The Specialist would typically be able to produce lists of the product-specific risk items likely to compromise a projects success, develop strategies to mitigate or control the risks, and be capable of tracking progress toward the resolution of risks items on their project and be accountable for the capability of all risk processes, people, and tools within their extended project team.

Systems Definition And Design - Understands and able to apply the basics of the system design process including requirements allocation and architecture, capability determination through system modeling and testing including Integrated Design Failure Mode And Effects Analysis (IDFMEA).

Manage Execution - Demonstrated results indicating deep knowledge of managing execution. Coordinates performance across regions, teams, and departments on complex projects and work flows. Applies a broad range of planning and monitoring tools. Defines planning and review practices that result in few missed milestones and minimal surprises. Effectively delegates to ensure completion of complex projects and work. Monitors progress of others and redirects efforts when goals change or are not met. Measures effectiveness of execution through defined metrics and disciplined monitoring.

Experience

  • 5-10 Years of relevant experience required

  • Leadership of small projects or portions of large projects

  • Cross functional project team leadership; empowerment, coaching, results driven

  • Effectively working within a global matrix organization

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • New product development or advanced engineering

  • Experience with powertrain systems, component engineering, preferably transmission development and integration

  • Demonstrate value of Joint Venture product and integrated systems with respect to GHG future requirements.

  • Utilize GEM model to conduct comparative analyses

  • Interface with JV engineering, marketing, and customers to identify product portfolio information gaps and opportunities

  • Plan and schedule Powertrain emissions testing in coordination with VTI

  • Establish a PLM process for release/ change control of regulated items including hardware, software, calibrations

  • Support new product launches in terms of GHG compliance readiness in order to meet OEM vehicle certification requirements

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree in Engineering required.
