AECOM’s Impact Assessment & Permitting (IAP) Department in DC Metro is looking for a creative and talented Geographic Information System (GIS) specialist to create the many maps and figures our studies and reports require. While the IAP Department focuses on environmental impact assessment, regulatory compliance, natural resources management, cultural resources management, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, and environmental permitting, our GIS Specialist will also support, as needed, other departments, including our Environmental Remediation and Compliance departments. The position will report to Arlington, VA. The ideal candidate for this position will be highly proficient with ArcGIS, detail oriented, and will combine technical knowledge with a good sense of design to create accurate, complete, clear, and attractive maps and figures for proposals, work plans, and reports. The ability to work with multiple teams on multiple projects at the same time and often on tight deadlines is essential. Candidates with no previous work experience will be expected to show relevant course work in GIS or cartography.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Preparation of maps/figures for environmental reports and public information/outreach.
Analysis of spatial data (e.g., distance and area measurements)
Aerial photography interpretation (e.g., land use, vegetation cover, topographical feature)
Digitization of field data or drawings.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to support various planning and environmental projects or field efforts in a capacity that extends beyond the core duties listed above. This may range from writing sections of NEPA documents or other reports to monitoring groundwater wells to collecting stormwater samples. Therefore, flexibility, wide-ranging interests, and the ability to learn quickly are essential to this position. The candidate will also be expected to develop successful working relationships with task and project managers within the company and eventually to generate his or her own work through these contacts, excellent performance, and successful networking within AECOM.
Bachelor’s degree in geography, cartography, geology, planning, environmental studies, or related field
Up to two years of relevant work experience, or at least two classes in GIS or cartography (work samples will be requested)
Proficiency with ArcGIS and MS Office Suite
Excellent communications skills and ability to work as part of a larger team
Evidence of strong analytlcal and writing skills.
Self-motivated, driven, and hard working with the ability to work in a fast-paced consulting environment.
Available for occasional travel and field work
Familiarity with AutoCAD and the conversion of CAD to GIS
Familiarity with GPS equipment and software
Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator
