The global Trading & Supply Products business generates sustained value in the oil products market for Shell, through maximizing trading value around Shell’s global asset base, and through the effective delivery and management of the supply of oil products and biofuels to Shell marketing businesses and 3rd parties.

What’s the role?

The Global Biodiesel Trading Book is embedded within Shell’s Global Middle Distillates trading business and sits within T&S Products. It is responsible for buying, selling, and actively trading biodiesel, renewable diesel, biofuels derivatives, and related emission reduction credits on behalf of RDS. Having been an early mover in trading biofuels on a global scale it has become an instrumental part of Shell’s Product Trading strategy and is key in ensuring that the Shell Group is able to meet its biofuels related obligations throughout its global Downstream businesses and the CO2 emission reduction targets in transport.

Within this context, the role will primarily focus on monitoring the political, legislative and regulatory landscape for opportunities and threats to our business and to then respond appropriately – usually through supporting the commercial teams developing their strategy and through external engagement and advocacy

More specific duties will include:

  • Represent Shell externally regarding Biofuels regulations and compliance with national regulators, industry bodies, and certification agencies

  • Monitor external biofuels landscape for upcoming regulatory changes and advocate with national authorities on policy, regulatory and market design issues that have a potential impact on Shell’s business

  • Developing insights and identifying opportunities to develop concrete plans to pursue them including preparing material to engage traders, commercial leaders and other senior stakeholders

  • Identify and formulate an aligned Trading & Supply Products advocacy position to support Shell’s overall Biofuels/Renewables Policy & Advocacy Strategy

  • Support Downstream businesses and country Operating Units in implementing regulatory requirements resulting from biofuels regulations

  • Build a network of internal and external stakeholder to ensure timely information in respect of ongoing political discussions impacting the biofuels regulatory space to support 1st mover advantage of the business

  • Implement certification, chain of custody processes, and reporting requirements across the supply chain and for new businesses models

  • Seek and assess business opportunities working as an integrated team member within Shell’s European Biofuels Trading hub based in Rotterdam

  • Coordinate and support annual regulatory compliance and ISCC EU re-certification audits and requests from regulators

The Regulatory Compliance Lead (RCL) sits alongside the Biodiesel and Ethanol traders, supply chain optimizers, and commercial operations. You will be a core member of the front office staff dealing with the Bio Trading & Supply business.

Requirements:

What we need from you

  • Extensive and proven track record on biofuels regulatory affairs particularly in the EU Renewable Energy Directive I & II and the Fuels Quality Directive (key requirement)

  • Sound knowledge of European biofuels markets and experience of the changing regulatory, commercial, customer and competitor playing field in the biofuels industry in global markets

  • Knowledge of the global waste and bio feedstock markets

  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills - ability to nurture and leverage relationships is the key to success in this role which requires the management of multiple internal cross function and business relationships as well as a strong external focus

  • Ability to combine a vast array of data/knowledge with specialist, strategic advice and synthesize it into a clear consistent storyline to ensure effective lobbying

  • Strong commercial acumen and delivery focus with deep interest in the trading business and biofuels

  • Creativity and ability to respond confidently (and in many cases under time pressure) to challenges in negotiations with highly experienced, commercially astute professionals

  • Highly motivated with self-starter mentality, strong team player

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Fluent Dutch, German, and English language skills required
