Agronomic Research Specialist

Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual to become part of the multi-disciplinary North American Field Testing Organization. Based out of Guelph, Ontario the Agronomic Research Specialist will partner with and support the Field Testing Team in overseeing daily operations associated with a comprehensive corn and soybean testing program aimed at developing and identifying high yielding hybrids and varieties. The individual will have the opportunity to assist in all phases of a testing program including seed packaging, planting, plot maintenance, volunteer monitoring, data collection, and harvest of breeding nursery and yield trials. Additional responsibilities include supervision and training of temporary employees, active participation in station safety and QMS programs, and develop relationships with internal and external partners and key influencers.

Key Business Accountabilities

  • Support and manage day-to-day operations of the research program and field testing sites

  • Plan, establish, maintain, collect accurate agronomic data from, and harvest canola and/or corn and soybean trials in a professional and timely manner

  • Support and manage regulated field trials under CFIA requirements for confined field trials or Stewarded Field trials under Monsanto Requirements

  • Provide support for precision agronomic strategies including GPS, GIS, soil sampling, and new equipment technology and its application into a breeding/testing program

  • Provide functional scientists and Principle Investigators with agronomic and quality data

  • Recruit, train, supervise and support the growth and development of temporary employees including Summer Research Assistants, seasonal labor and contract field operations as needed throughout the season

  • -mplement ESH procedures and programs for safe operation of the research program

  • Maintain facilities and equipment for effective and efficient program operation

  • Represent Monsanto and the North American Field Testing and Operations group on field tours, industry seminars, etc.

  • Support other Agronomic Research Specialist and Field Testing hubs through participation in Nomad exchange programs wherein the individual may be requested to travel to other locations to assist where/as needed

Scope of the Job

  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of the research program with respect to budgetary guidelines and expectations. Support the site ESH program as it applies to North American Field Testing and Operations

  • Selection, preparation and maintenance of multiple field testing sites. May require safe driving including frequent trailer use hauling loads in excess of 10,000 lbs; pre-trip inspections and use of log books

  • Plays a vital role is trial preparation including seed processing, packaging, shipping, protocol review, trial placement and mapping/field design

  • Maintain field trial sites as weed, insect and disease free; Confident ability in identifying key weeds, insect and disease problems is critical, as is timely and accurate implementation of control measures

  • With the use of handheld electronic equipment and Monsanto proprietary software, collect notes on various agronomic traits (e.g. emergence uniformity, flowering date, lodging, height, maturity, shattering resistance) in a timely manner throughout the growing season

  • Harvest plots and collect samples for quality and statistical analysis; ensure harvest data is evaluated and relinquished in accordance with crop advancement deadlines to aid in product advancement decisions

  • Develop, maintain and implement the use of controlled SOP documents, QMS procedures and investigative protocols

  • Comply with all CFIA and Monsanto regulatory compliance guidelines for Confined Release and Stewarded Trial material

  • Regular interaction with other Agronomic Research Specialist, Site Leads, and Principal Investigators is expected to facilitate efficient trial planning and placement, sharing of ideas and techniques and quick response to issues that may arise (e.g. weather or pests affecting trials)

  • Work closely with plant breeders, Principal Investigators and Research Associates to fully understand the multiple stages of crop development and the importance of each step involved and share experiences cross-functionally as needed


  • B.Sc. in Agriculture or related field with 3 years agricultural research experience; or Agricultural diploma and 5+ years agricultural research experienceBroad knowledge of Canadian crop production and farming practices, canola, corn and/or soybean agronomy, plant breeding and precision agriculture applications

  • Operation and maintenance of agricultural research equipment

  • Effective team leadership qualities including excellent organizational and motivational skills, accurate record keeping and attention to detail

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis and experimental design principles

  • Computer skills related to data acquisition and analysis, proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and precision agriculture technology

  • Appropriate provincial drivers license for medium vehicle operation (>10,000 lbs GCWR)

  • First Aid certification, provincial pesticide application license and TDG certification where required

  • Ability to work extended hours during peak planting and harvest seasons
