Position Summary:

Analyze, troubleshoot, test, calibrate and/or repair gas and electronic instruments, both basic and advanced instrumentation, company wide. A trainee who has successfully completed all phases of the Metrologist training program will be qualified to perform all duties of this job description in a self directed manner. We are looking for one or more Metrologists to work with our Metrology Department at our service center in Henderson, CO. The starting rate of pay for this position is $38.56 hourly.


  1. Analyze, troubleshoot, test, calibrate and/or repair gas and electronic instruments both basic and advanced instrumentation, company wide, in accordance with applicable N.I.S.T. and PUC regulations, Manufacturer and Company standards (including, but not limited to: Multimeters, Ammeters, Recording Volt/Amp meters, Odormeters, Combustible Detection devices, Pipe Finders).

  2. Troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate and/or repair the mechanical and electronic portions of the Electric and Gas Meter Shop test equipment (WECO test boards).

  3. Ensure test standards and equipment are within compliance for rules governing N.I.S.T. traceability; maintain documentation as necessary.

  4. Test metering (current and voltage) transformers and perform quality assurance procedures.

  5. Perform testing and calibration of thermocouples.

  6. Update instrument calibration and/or repair data and communicate condition of equipment with using departments.

  7. Maintain current and accurate inventory of loaner instruments and material.

  8. Maintain appropriate stock level and perform all duties associated with the ordering, shipping and receiving of instruments, parts, materials, tools, calibration gases and chemicals.

  9. Train Company personnel on the functional use of instruments, as well as maintenance and care of the instrument.

  10. Assist higher classification and make recommendations in the evaluation of new test procedures and instruments/equipment for use by Company personnel.

  • All Xcel Energy/PSCO departments and Company contractors

  • Manufacturers and vendors

General knowledge and skills of the following:

  • Advanced electronic principles and repair techniques

  • Gas instrument principles and repair techniques

  • Basic Watt-Hour metering principles

  • Basic gas metering principles

  • Proper and safe use and handling of hazardous gas flows and compatibilities with chemicals

  • Proper disposal of hazardous materials per DOT and EPA standards and regulations

  • N.I.S.T. traceability rules for all standards and instruments

  • Company safety policies and procedures

  • Basic knowledge of Company Gas and Electric Standards

  • Safety and testing procedures for high voltage instruments

  • Transformer testing procedures for accuracy class ratings

  • Thermocouple testing and calibration procedures

  • Ability to read schematics

  • Basic knowledge of pumps, motors and various moving parts

  • Soldering repair technique and application

  • All applicable city, county, state and federal rules and regulations

  • Ability to use electric and hand tools, and stationary bench tools

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft operating systems and programs and Company systems

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school education or equivalent

  • Maintain Valid Colorado driver’s license

  • Must meet advancement criteria as defined by the Joint Training Committee

  • Electronics experience is preferred

  • Associates or Technical Degree in Electronics is preferred

  5. After successful passing of the background check and drug test, candidates are ready to start the training class.
