Primary Role

Provides legal support and assistance to Counsel and/or law department in respect to legal issues affecting the business as assigned.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist in the preparation and filing of judicial and administrative proceedings. May include: general litigation, public utility commission filings, mediations, arbitrations, hearings and other dispute resolution proceedings. (50%)

  • Provides general paralegal support with respect to labor and employment matters such as: grievance filings, disciplinary proceedings, discrimination claims, compensation claims, arbitrations and/or collective bargaining agreements. (30%)

  • Assist in the maximization of quality, cost and efficiency of acquired outside legal services. (10%)

  • Serve as a member of the legal team and support Counsel in building the capabilities of the team. (10%)

  • Assist in the preparation and review of contracts and other legal documents as directed to ensure that the best interests of the business are protected. (10%)

  • Assist in discovery requests, subpoenas and service of process received by the law department. (20%)

Knowledge / Skills

  • Knowledge of routine legal procedures and legal terminology.

  • Knowledge of preparation of standard legal documents.

  • Ability to successfully interact with and be responsive to other management, professional and non-professional employees of the Corporation and its affiliates.

  • Ability to successfully interact with the administrative function of courts of competent jurisdiction and to conduct oneself in a professional and persuasive manner with the appropriate stakeholders. Appropriate and successful interaction with attorneys and professionals, including assistance with the management of outside legal counsel.

  • Ability to provide successful interaction with customers, contractors, vendors and the general public.

  • Ability to develop strong and rewarding relationships in respect to all of the forelisted interactions.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Certificate in paralegal studies, or at least 5 years’ experience as a practicing paralegal or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum 2 years as a practicing paralegal experience with paralegal certification/Bachelor’s degree or minimum 5 years as a practicing paralegal experience without paralegal certification/degree.
