Inspects, maintains, and replaces control devices, such as gate valves and hydrants on water mains throughout the distribution system.
Performs all functions in a safe and conscientious manner with constant regard for the safety of fellow employees and the general public.
Inspects, disassembles, and repairs damaged or malfunctioning control devices of water distribution systems, using hand and/or power tools.
Erects barricades and places safety lights around work sites to protect workers from street traffic; may flag traffic as required.
Breaks up pavement, using air hammer, and manually digs ditches preparatory to laying or removing pipe or service lines. Maneuvers pipe sections, valves, and fittings in to position. Backfills excavations using compaction equipment on dirt, crushed stone, and cold-mix asphalt.
Replaces defective parts and/or installs new control devices, using hand and/or power tools. Adjusts valves to control water pressure and flow for operating conditions, such as water main leaks, shut-offs, and for trial and emergency purposes. Prepares requisitions and reports concerning materials needed to effectively repair distribution system.
Determines cause and extent of damage to system and equipment.
Operates or assists in the operation of small backhoe. Interprets system maps and field locates water company facilities. Performs wet taps, using large and small tapping machines, installs repair sleeves, flares copper, installs meter settings and yokes.
Cuts, threads, and screws together sections of pipe forming service line, and lays service line into trench. Participates in a hydrant program. Removes and installs water meters and reads meter after installation. Drives company vehicles and pulls trailers.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Familiarity with other functions in the Distribution Department to assist in operations, as needed.

High School diploma/GED
Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
Regularly works in outside weather conditions and regularly exposed to vibration. Noise level is usually loud.
Works overtime, as required.
