The Analytical Chemistry group includes three lab-based teams that provide analytical problem solving and support to R&D projects, as well as technical consultation to a wide range of Shell businesses. Our partners include various Shell businesses, e.g. Downstream Refining and Chemicals, Upstream, conventional and bio fuels, Lubricants, and Catalysis. The Analytical Chemistry Group currently consists of over 100 professionals with a wide range of analytical specialties and skills. Our laboratory locations are in Amsterdam, Bangalore and Houston, all of which provide in-lab and on-site support to Shell operations worldwide.


Assignments on this team include responsibility for developing new analytical methods, implementing advanced analytical instrumentation, and managing on-going testing activities supporting R&D programs as well as Downstream/Upstream operations. We help our business partners measure and understand what is happening in their products, process streams or laboratories.

Although analytical lab roles are assigned to a single location, there is significant collaboration across the Analytical lab teams, and regular interaction with technical colleagues to share best practices. This leads to a highly collaborative work environment that is very conducive to creating a business impact while expanding your technical skills and business knowledge.

  • Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer both now and in the future.

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or Materials Engineering

  • Expert knowledge in material characterization using XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy)

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience (postdoctoral or industry) in characterizing non-conducting inorganic materials (catalysts and rock samples)

  • Hands-on experience in TEM, SEM, FIB-SEM, XRD is strongly preferred
