Data Analytics is a fast-growing discipline with numerous current and potential applications almost everywhere in Shell’s business. It is part of the Digitalisation transformation that is currently happening in Shell and, in fact, across the whole industry.

The R&D Data Science team focuses on the analysis and optimisation of business processes by application of mathematical, statistical and computational techniques to the process data as they are available. This includes modelling of chemical or physical processes as they occur in e.g. LNG plants, GTL reactors, refineries. Apart from process optimisation, other techniques include ‘traditional’ data driven (black box) approaches, including Bayesian techniques and Deep Learning, as well as combinations of deterministic (white box) and date driven approaches, so called ‘grey box’. The identification of new business problems, translating these into well-defined solvable research problems is an important aspect of the job.

• Will lead significant projects and assists others in the technical aspects of projects with an R&D focus

• Contributes to the improvement of existing data science/analysis processes, with a particular focus on new and emerging techniques (e.g. machine learning)

• Works with stakeholders giving advice and technical support, acting as a Subject Matter Expert

• Software tool development with an R&D focus, but interfacing with other parts of the team (Data Engineering, Data Science Development, IT) to scale-up solutions

• Proactively seeks new opportunities in line with business plans

• Makes use of networks to promote data science

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Ph.D. in (applied) Math, Physics or an engineering discipline. Candidates with a Master’s degree in any of these disciplines can also apply if they can demonstrate R&D skills and delivery from earlier experiences.

  • Strong background in process optimization theory, numerical analytics, and machine learning.

  • Solid programming experience in a higher-level programming language, like Python, C++, Java, MATLAB etc.

  • Understanding what it takes to convert an R&D result to end-to-end delivery to the end customer

  • Good communication and reporting skills, and experience leading R&D projects with a big budgets
