Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Coverage Research and Analysis - Responsible for researching policies and analyzing coverage. Prepares and presents recommendations to management or coverage committee. Communicates coverage position to policyholders or their representatives. Liability Investigation and Analysis - Conducts thorough investigation and analysis of claim facts to determine liability. Applies knowledge of relevant legal concepts in jurisdiction to evaluation of damages and develops recommendation for appropriate course of action. Litigation Management - Develops and executes a strategic file management plan, including as appropriate: research and recommendation of counsel; litigation and resolution strategies; management of loss adjustment expenses; engagement of appropriate experts; use of proper settlement and release language. Represents insured at mediations. Account Management - Applies in-depth knowledge and understanding of assigned accounts in actions and decisions. Maintains effective working relationships with other account contacts; ensures claims and settlement agreements are handled in a consistent manner. Responsible for regular communication and reporting to coordinate / align actions on assigned accounts. Financial Analysis - Estimates financial exposures on an individual claim and account basis. Develops budgets and financial analyses, estimating defense expenses and/or indemnity. File Maintenance and Administrative Compliance - Maintains documentation and organization of claim files; maintains systems and data bases. Efficiently manages the file inventory. Staff Development - May be involved in training, mentoring and interviewing. Project Leadership - May lead or represent the unit/office on special projects at request of management. Other Duties as assigned.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, manages large exposure and/or complex environmental litigation/claims on a regional or national basis with the goal of developing the strategy for resolving a myriad of claim and coverage issues. Position requires development of advanced knowledge of legal issues (including a solid knowledge of applicable case law) for a number of jurisdictions. Factors contributing to the complexity of the claims include the nature of the underlying liability, the unique coverage issues presented, the existence of coverage disputes/litigation, the number of class-action and multi-plaintiff matters, volatile jurisdictions, the evolving nature of the legal decisions relating to the liability and coverage issues presented, the interpretation and application of complex settlement agreements and the highly technical nature of the coverage and liability issues. Will handle or oversee litigation and claims of highly significant complexity and exposure within the range of Strategic Resolution Group (SRG) matters. This job does not manage others.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree preferred. 5+ years of experience in environmental claim and coverage determination preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

HS Diploma / GED required. A minimum of 4 years of experience in environmental claim and coverage determination or in handling severe, highly complex liability claims and litigation. In order to perform the essential functions of this job, acquisition and maintenance of Insurance License(s) may be required to comply with state and Travelers requirements. Generally, license(s) must be obtained within three months of starting the job.
