Responsibilities:

The Radiation Therapist is an integral member of the Radiation Oncology team who primarily functions in a specialized area of Radiation Therapy Technology in the role of direct patient care provider in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Scope of position is defined by the Medical Radiologic Technology Act of the State of Texas, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and the standards of Radiation Therapy. The Radiation Therapist is responsible for the performance of all duties relating to the administration of a prescribed course of Radiation Therapy. The Radiation Therapist must be able to understand and carry out complex medical prescription. The Radiation Therapist must be able to communicate verbally in a clear and concise manner to personnel, patients, and physicians, and be task and detail oriented. Most importantly, the Radiation Therapist provides quality patient care in direct relation to the patient’s needs based on age specific, diagnosis, treatment, emotional, nutritional and other identified needs. Must follow and adhere to all federal and state laws and regulations, as well as the HCA Code of Conduct and WHMC Performance Standards.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of an AMA Accredited Program of Radiation Therapy Technology, or a suitable equivalent.

  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy Technology.

  • Licensed in Medical Radiologic Technology by the Texas State Department of Health.

  • Proficient in the utilization of all Radiation Therapeutic and diagnostic equipment within the department. Accurately and efficiently reviews and/or administers daily prescribed Radiation Therapy treatments to patients assigned to the treatment unit at a speed consistent with patient scheduling. Manually calculates and/or verifies each treatment time for every patient or new treatment field. Proficient in simulation according to established guidelines and associated time frames of productivity. Demonstrates progressive performance improvement in fundamentals of job description in order to achieve additional competency in specialty areas to include: Brachytherapy Localization, Stereotactic Radiosurgery treatments and fabrication complex immobilization devices. Throughout the course of Radiation Therapy, monitors patient for unusual reactions and events and reports same to radiation oncologist. Constantly maintains professional level of conduct. Preserves confidentiality of patients/co-workers, respecting their dignity, privacy and differences. Shows respect for hospital property and the property of others. Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills with patients and personnel. Recognizes patient’s emotional needs and responds to them appropriately, and with regard to the needs of all patient age groups. Employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care or support based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area, as defined in this job description/performance evaluation.
