American Water Utility Worker III in Huntington, West Virginia

  • Primary Role*

/ Position exists to perform a variety of tasks to ensure efficent and reliable operation, maintenance, protection and appearance of all pipelines; services hydrants, valves and other appurtenances./

  • Key Accountabilities*

  • Perform all functions of the position in a safe and conscientious manner, with constant regard for the safety of fellow employees and the general public.

  • Erects barricades and places safety lights around work sites to protect workers from street traffic; may flag traffic as required.

  • Ensure sites are secure before leaving Interprets system maps and field locates water company assets, remove and install water meters; Inspects, disassembles, and repairs damaged or malfunctioning control devices of water distribution systems, using hand and/or power tools.

  • Will break up pavement, using air hammer or other tools; manually digs ditches in preparation of laying or removing pipe or service lines; maneuvering pipe sections, valves and fittings in to position.

  • Must be able to lift and manuever equipment and materials of varying weights up to 100 lbs.

  • Backfills excavations using compaction equipment on dirt, crusted stone and cold-mix; may operate small backhoe Inspect meters, valves, hydrants, and pipes to detect leaks or malfunctioning.

  • Tighten pipe connections to prevent leaks using wrenches and other hand tools as required.

  • Use technology to prepare requisitions and/or reports to appropriately maintain service records.

  • May be assigned to perform responsibilities either individually or in conjunction with other employees.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge/Skills*

  • Must basic geographical knowledge of company's service area and must be adaptable to variations in topography and weather conditions.

  • Working knowledge of company policies, procedures and safety practices as well as regulations regarding confined spaces.

  • Experience/Education*

/ Experience:/

  • Able to operate company equipment and vehicles necessary for completion of assigned responsibilities.

/ Education:/

  • GED/HS Diploma required

  • Licenses & Certifications*

  • Must maintain valid drivers' license and safe driving record
