Under the general direction of the Consumer Products Group (CPG) Vice President and Global Director, McKesson seeks a Category Leader to deliver industry-leading portfolio results. CPG's direction to guide the future of customer segment builds through total management ownership of the portfolio. This change leader creates the framework for the future of CPG across all of McKesson's non-Rx programs. Strategic big-picture thinking, supplier market analysis, and strong influencing skills are paramount to successful candidacy. This highly-visible position is the model for change management in consumer pharmaceutical distribution.
This position is a strategic Category Leader accountable to define McKesson’s CPG segment go-to market plan through creation of total value chain solutions. This position is the expert advisor to internal stakeholders that positions CPG as a long-term profitable, value-added addition to McKesson’s current suite of customer tools.
This leader is an autonomous critical-thinker with business confidence, a general manager who will be responsible and accountable for a large portfolio of products and programs with minimal direction and guidance. A successful candidate will bring knowledge and expertise into the role and help develop the team and department.
Define and direct category strategy to leaders with minimal guidance and direction.
Develop business plans, managing lifecycles, and product positioning.
Lead creation of new products and programs from ideation through post-mortem analysis. Utilize relationships and influence to garner buy-in and cross-functional support for development, launch, and management of products and programs.
Will act as a technical advisor for specific categories of products.
Create and nurture a leadership culture within category management.
Develop and lead long-term strategic planning process (i.e. merchandising programs to deliver industry-leading results); review, approve and distribute resources against plans.
Fully own the segment product process; develop and lead annual segment business planning process including budgets, forecasts, and financial targets. 1-3-5 years out; approve category and sub-category targets and any forecasted deviations from plan.
Review and approve recommended category line review decisions, plan-o-grams, and pricing tiers as it relates to the consumer group’s strategic business plan and financial targets.
Create and support team culture of constant innovation, freshness, and improvement; embrace, develop, and drive new ideas and thinking including enhancements to process, communication, tools, systems, items, and programs.
Effectively collaborate cross-functionally, especially with sales, marketing, finance, and replenishment team members to drive results.
Set up and support supplier relationships and negotiate supplier cost, quality, and delivery terms; discuss escalated issues related to replenishment and work with suppliers to resolve quickly.
Stay current on customer, consumer, and competitive marketplace trends; communicate business needs and opportunities to senior management.
Apply new learning; adjust resources and/or priorities to deliver profitable customer solutions.
Launch private label products and capture market share.
5 years experience in areas such as product management, purchasing, marketing/sales, and or finance, inclusive of 2 years experience in category management and 1 years experience in a team lead capacity
Strategic critical-thinker, autonomous self-starter with confident decision-making capabilities
MS Office skills – Intermediate Access, and advanced Excel & PowerPoint skills
Previous Category Management experience to include distribution
Strong analytical experience with the ability to balance a product portfolio, instruct procurement on purchasing decisions & managing inventory, and running financial analysis.
Ability to collaborate with all levels of sales leadership
Executive-level presentation ability
Prior product / supplier experience (product marketing in medical, retail, or merchandising)
Additional Knowledge & Skills
Familiar with healthcare processes, contracts, and rebates.
Business Intelligence experience using Business Objects or SQL
Understanding of the independent drug market, retail national accounts, and hospital systems
Process improvement background in FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods)
Strong analytical skills including financials and supply chain data
Strong negotiation/influencing skills
Ability to collaborate across different channels
4-year degree in business, finance, marketing, or related field, or equivalent experience
