The Convenience Retail Category Manager is responsible for establishing the vision, strategy, key marketing tactics and upholding the relationship with leading product manufacturers for the assigned categories, in support of the achievement of business sales and profitability targets. This purpose is satisfied via close adherence to retailing category management planning and implementation principles supported by fact-based decision making regarding product mix, pricing, merchandising and promotions under industry standard processes. The Category Manager also makes sure their category actions are grounded on local market trends, consumer behavior, and the competitive environment of the marketplace.
In the Shell context, the local Category Managers are supported by professionally formed global category communities led by the Global CR Category Management team. This set up allows synergies of global strategy and local business impact, transference of best practices and the unique perspective gained from the combination of global strategy with close to market operational exposure. The “look of success” for the combined global and local relationship is the achievement of revenue and margin targets and the aspiration of category growth greater than market levels.
The Category Manager foremost role is to manage categories as units of business, lead growth and profitability actions and to function as local subject matter expert of the assigned categories. As such, the starting point for the role is the achievement of a clear and tangible direction for the category in Indonesia. This direction includes:
Understanding real potential for commercial growth for the assigned category in a 1/3/5 years horizon
Identify customer missions/consumer need states/target category segments/market growth strategy
Define growth opportunities and execution levers by country/category/brand
Tracks business results and recommend country-specific solutions to address category deviation from operating plan
Main responsibilities in this position are:
Mid- and short-term management of the 5C categories incl. subcategories
Supports creation and delivery of a category strategy and implementation model for the categories under his/her accountability. Implement the category activity plan within budget and timeframe specified in the marketing plan
Supports Category Managers in the delivery of sales, margin and supplier income targets as per T&R
Ongoing analyses of assortment, customer and industry trends and needs, competition as well as success control are crucial part of this role.
Operational management of external supplier including ongoing relationship management and advertisement contribution.
Supports identification of corrective actions for deviations versus plans on the core marketing areas of Price, Promotion (decomposition and planning), Product (range and assortment) and Placement (plan programing and adjacencies).
Leveraging cross-category opportunities
Develop and execute projects that are assigned as well as initiate own. Co-operates with local and global category management
Manage the relationship with sales and operations effectively to ensure delivery of the plans at site; interfaces with retailers and sale & operations

Experience and Qualifications required

Professional marketing experience and a good overall understanding of the Retail business will therefore be an advantage in any application. The following qualifications will form a key part of the evaluation process and the selection of the candidate for the role:
Min. Bachelor’s degree
Minimum 2-5 years of experience in CR profession, with retail experience preferred.
First-hand experience and understanding of fast moving consumer goods marketing with excellent negotiation skills and supplier relationship
Full Category Management cycle expertise is a must. Evidence of planning and analyzing results for the purpose of adjusting Retail Category Management plans is a minimal expectation.
Strong understanding of retail fundamentals of buying, assorting, placement, merchandising and retail operational processes
Robust analytical skills with deep customer understanding and consumer led mindset – Ideal candidates are ones that are able to sort through all the information available and determine what is useful and what is not. Synthesizing information and acting upon it is very important
Capable of interfacing and influencing people at all levels of the organization. Ability to influence and get work done through others who are not direct reports.
Manage time and stress decisively. Proven ability to not get sidetracked on issues that have no long-term value or immobilized by the pressure of breaking new ground and producing “quick wins.”
Proven track record as a team player
Able to work effectively in partnerships
Ability to dual task, work under pressure and change environment
Deep understanding of retail economics, especially business case development principles and cost-to-completion projections.
Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Fluent spoken and written English
