Description

Job Description:

Leidos is looking for a mid-career level engineer with an Aerospace background to support our growing work in the King of Prussia office. This is a technical engineering position to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD), thermal response, and signature modeling tools to predict flowfields and both EO/IR and RCS signatures of air vehicles. Work will focus on hypersonic aerodynamics, aeroheating, material thermal response, and signatures as well as non-linear aerodynamics at subsonic and supersonic speeds.

Be part of a close knit team and be mentored by world class experts. The Aerophysics group operates in a small team environment where individual creativity is rewarded and continuous learning is the norm. Our engineers directly interact with customers to ensure high quality and timely deliverables are achieved.

The successful candidate will be able to use computational fluid dynamics modeling and simulation to generate aerodynamic and aeroheating loads for subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic vehicles. The candidate will perform gridding, computational fluid dynamics simulations, flow visualization, and workflow programming, using both local and DoD Supercomputing Resource Centers for massive deployment and monitoring of solutions and harvesting of results. The candidate will utilize signature analysis tools to generate signature databases of vehicles over given flight trajectories.

It is highly desired that the candidate also has experience with development of new business, including interactions with potential customers, generation of white papers and proposals, and familiarity with costing of proposed efforts.

Required

Experience Level: The candidate would be expected to be able to perform CFD and signatures analysis with minimal supervision. The candidate should also be able to grasp the big picture and make decisions about how to proceed with analysis with minimal supervision. The candidate should have 5+ years of experience or a PhD in Aerospace Engineering (or similar) and 2-3 years of experience.

Knowledge: Experience with subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic computational fluid dynamic models with software such as Cart3D, Kestrel, FUN3D, US3D or equivalent is required. Knowledge of turbulence modeling and chemical equilibrium and non-equilibrium modeling is required. Experience with block structured and unstructured gridding with software such as Pointwise or equivalent is required. Experience with signature generation software such as SPURC or PARCS is required. Ability to utilize DoD DSRC capabilities including deploy/run/harvest workflow scripting is required. Experience with differing levels of modeling fidelity (low, medium, high) and material response modeling (thermal, ablation, erosion, etc.) is desired.

Communication Skills: Successful candidates should be able to effectively communicate with Leidos colleagues and interact regularly with customers. Must present both verbal and written status on a regular basis.

Engineering Skills:

  • Numerical gridding (Pointwise or similar)
  • Scripting to enable numerical codes to communicate and to run in a batch fashion (Python, Matlab preferred)
  • Computational fluid dynamics for subsonic / supersonic / hypersonic flows (Kestrel, FUN3D, or similar)
  • Thermal response simulation (temperature, ablation, and/or erosion response)
  • Post processing CFD data
  • Operating on supercomputing clusters
  • Signature generation (SPURC, PARCS, or similar)

Education: Requires a BS in Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar discipline and 5+ years of experience in CFD or a PhD with 2-3+ years of experience.

Clearance: Must be a U.S. Citizen with active Secret clearance.

Travel: Attend customer meetings, estimated < 10%.
