Job Description

Our Research Scientists are our Inventors. We identify and target steps in disease mechanisms or pathways that could be inhibited or enhanced. The Vice President/Head of Data & Genome Sciences (DGS) will be responsible for building an Industry leading strategy that derives unique insights derived from biological data generated both in house and externally. The successful candidate will lead a global team of data and laboratory scientists (120+, “dry” and “wet” labs) that will access genetic and genomic data from preclinical and clinical studies. There will be a heavy focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) approaches to enable our company's scientists to effectively derive insights that can meaningfully impact our drug discovery pipeline.

The successful candidate has both strong visionary and operational leadership capabilities and digital technology skills. They should understand the power of storytelling and will be able to share a compelling vision that inspires the global adoption and acceleration of our company's analytics capabilities for discovery research. They will set the digital priorities, embed new ways of working and drive the adoption of an analytics-first approach to drive to better target selection and acceleration of our pipeline. In addition, they will be able to spot trends and best practices, using those to advise on solutions, platforms and offerings.

Furthermore, this leader will have the communication skills to evangelize and educate senior leadership on how and why data sciences must be used as a critical business solution, as well as compel others by synthesizing complex data into meaningful stories that provide context, explain nuances and inspire actions. They will be a critical member of a network of data scientists across the enterprise, serve as a thought leader and trusted business advisor to senior management and various stakeholders, helping them to identify and scope strategic analytics opportunities with transformative value creation potential.

This role reports to the Senior Vice President of Discovery, Preclinical & Translation Medicine (DPTM).

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead a rapidly growing team of experts in the fields of data science, statistical computing, and high-dimensional genomic data management, and guide the further development and expansion of the group.

  • Oversee the development and integration of tools, applications and statistical workflows that enable interactive, hypothesis-driven data analysis by scientists with diverse levels of computational and bioinformatic expertise

  • Maintain knowledge of technology trends and the emerging informatics landscape in our industry; identify and evaluate emerging informatics solutions that could advance our scientific objectives and maintain our competitive edge

  • Maintain and develop close research partnerships with the other key functions within our company's Discovery, Preclinical and Translational Medicine (DPTM) including Quantitative Biosciences, Discovery Chemistry, Discovery Biologics, Preclinical Development, Translational Medicine and our therapeutic areas (Neuroscience, Immunology, Cardiometabolic disease, Oncology, Infectious Diseases/Vaccines) to ensure that platforms and processes meet the prioritized needs of our scientists

  • Build and manage strong partnerships with other informatics and computational groups across our company (including Research and Development IT, Biostatistics and Research Decision Sciences) and the broader organization

  • Be a leader in pursuing integrative informatics and data initiatives across our company; influence and set strategic direction to ensure delivery of relevant informatics solutions with cross-functional impacts, and leverage learnings and best practices across the organization

Digital and technical competencies

  • Strong digital capabilities developed through experience working on digital initiatives

  • Demonstrated track record of translating advanced analytics and data problems into tangible digital initiatives

  • Analytical expertise with experience delivering robust analytics initiatives across business units requiring cross-functional collaboration

  • Technologist fluent in digital, data technologies, platforms, solutions, and tools

  • Solutions expert with experience defining tooling roadmaps and mapping interaction between cross-functional teams within an enterprise

  • Strong knowledge in both digital and business perspectives, preferred having special expertise within Research

  • Proven experience in data lifecycle management, data governance, and data quality

Education:

  • Advanced level degree (PhD or similar) in mathematics, bioinformatics, computational science or similar data science related degree

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in academia, pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology R&D with a track record of managing leading large scale multifunctional programs incorporating large data sets.

  • Experience and expertise in working with a wide range of research data from preclinical, translational, and clinical studies (eg genomics, genetics, proteomics, etc.).
