Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

Operates, repairs, and maintains heavy power construction equipment such as compressors, pumps, hoists, shovels, trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, scrapers, motor graders, skid steers, and associated equipment. Work is scheduled by the manager or supervisor based on mission schedule and fleet requirements.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform heavy equipment maintenance activities including installation, repair, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance.
  • Responsible for operating equipment to maintain roadways and firebreaks by excavating, moving, and grading earth.
  • Disassemble and reassemble engines and mechanical units to inspect and diagnose parts using computerized test equipment, calibration devices, gauges, etc.
  • Repair and overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Repair air conditioning systems.
  • Calibrate load monitoring indicators to ensure safe and reliable lifts.
  • Rebuild hydraulic cylinders, valves, planetary drive units, suspensions, springs, bushings, and kingpins.
  • Replace seals and bearings, axel brakes, and crane rigging.
  • Pours concrete or other road paving and construction materials.
  • Performs loading, unloading, and lifting operations using heavy equipment.
  • Assists the Maintenance Supervisor in directing and accomplishing range maintenance.
  • Rebuild hydraulic cylinders, valves, planetary drive units, suspensions, springs, bushings, and kingpins.
  • Act as point-of-contact for maintenance issues in absence of Maintenance Supervisor or Foreman.
  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) to Five (5) years of experience in operating and maintaining heavy equipment.
  • Licensed or trained to operate applicable items of heavy equipment.
  • Must be experienced in the repair of major systems.
  • Specialized knowledge and skills in diesel and heavy automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Skilled in replacing major components and parts on engineering and construction equipment.
  • Practical understanding of theory of hydraulics (Pascal Theory), pulley, and gear ratio.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of diagnostics and ability to conduct technical research on the computer.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write English.
  • The preferred candidate has a valid work & residency permit to work in Germany, or be a national of the European Union / European Economic Area.
  • This position is not approved for relocation.

Contract Requirements in accordance with Appendix J:

  • Completed training in Vehicle Maintenance or related field from military technical school or an accredited technical school/college/university.
  • Two (2) years’ experience maintaining special purpose-type vehicles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer motor vehicle air conditioning certification and experience.
  • Prefer knowledge of US military heavy vehicles and equipment, Material Handling Equipment (MHE), OSHA, American National Standards Institute (ANSI), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), military regulations standards, and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) requirements
